Newbie needing to find 30cal 155's

#1 Postby bel68 » Tue Jan 18, 2022 3:41 pm

As a newbie to the sport, I was just wondering where the secret stash of 155gr 30cal projectiles is:? I understand the rules for F Std in that there is an "approved" list of projectiles - trouble is, if you cant buy any, are we able to use any other alternatives? I see Victoria has seen the light and relaxed the rules for 2022 to maintain participation levels; is that on the cards for QLD?

I reckon its OK at the moment to use any 30cal projectile, 156gr or lighter. If anyone challenges that, tell them I said it was OK :).... with one caveat - if you are thinking of entering a queen's prize and might be in the running for a place, clear it with the RO !

Better check by calling them first.
I ordered the 2155s from them yesterday, and in typical cleaver fashion, they accept an order without having the item in stock. :^o
They then cancelled that part of the order, and keep just the items that were in stock, and charge their minimum postage fee. only one of the items from their site was in stock, including items from their "Specials" list.
I had a few minor items added to the main order of projectiles, only one of those items was In stock and appears to be now on its way with a massive postage ..... rant over

I'm not advocating breaking the rules here, but how does an RO make the judgement that a projectile is not an approved one? Coloured tips and the branding on the base of Scenar L aside there is not a lot to definitvly determine the identity of a bullet just by looking.

Anyone know an RO who wanders around with a sample of each legal projectile in their pocket along with the necessary measuring equipment? It would be a game RO who declared a projectile illegal just by looking.

It's an unenforceable rule, therefore it's just noise getting in the way of the sport.

Pete, at the queens you are required to hand over a round for testing. I have seen it before, and the returned round was in a plastic bag, case, powder and projectile.
Apparently over the years, rumour has it...... some have used 175's, 185s or others which are impossible to tell until you pull the projectile.

BTW
Rang that shop in QLD this morning, despite what their Web site says, they have no sierra 2155 or 2156, in either 100 or 500 boxes.
Do not believe anything on their Web site. 4 things ordered. One small item posted to me ??????

Yes I've had my round tested also. But what is the test?
If it's weighing, that tells us nothing about the origin of a projectile. The NRAA rule is about a projectile's origin - that is - who made it?

Is there a set of ogive gauges somewhere that can tell if the proj is a genuine 155 hybrid for example? If not, we're just guessing.

A knock off of a 155 hybrid is illegal, even if it is dimensionally the same, and who can tell?
But hybrids vary between batches, so they are dimensionally different, the base to ogive varies between batches. that is they are different projectiles with the same packaging.

This can be taken to ridiculous levels which makes the rule unenforceable. It's a throwback to when we had a projectile levy and needs to be deleted.

Probably why testing is no longer done.
The rule is unenforceable and is only good to catch those game enough to use something heavier than 155 gn.( for TR and FS )
Not much point having rules unless they are seen to be enforced.

When dealing with Cleavers it is best to ask the sales person to have it in front of them.... the product before placing the order if its not in front of them don't place the order.

When you cannot get 155s anymore it may be time to try a new discipline .... or a new sport.
