#1 Postby Pablolig » Fri Apr 30, 2021 5:33 pm

Hi guys,

Does anyone use the Sierra MK 184 gr in the 284 Win?
Barrel twist 8.25:1

I shot these for the first time 2 weeks ago. 1.25" x 30" 4 groove 8T Krieger barrel. Load 49.8/2209 at 600m. First round (10) jump was .020 hollow group 156 mm vertical of 129.6mm for 59.2. Second round (10) same load .040 jump flatter group. Wind had started to get a bit twitchy group a bit bigger at197.3mm. but vertical of 76.4mm. for 58.3. When I am testing I do not make any adjustments, just hold center, so as I can see what the non adjusted group is. If you go chasing shots I feel you do not get a correct summary of the test. Next time will compare .040 and .060 jumps. I have never liked jamming projectiles and have never been disappointed by shooting jumps. Second round ballistics, average M/V. 2768, S.D. 6.3, E.S 15. Results from Labradar. Hope to do the .040?.060 test Sunday at 800m.
Cheers,
Trevor.

From the whispers I've heard regarding this projectile it performs best either with a slight jam or slight jump depending on barrel. Based on that, I'd start 10thou in the lands and work back.

I’ve shot them in a 9T 7-08ai with promising results.

I think I've been a very volcal supporter of the quality and performance of this projectile...certainly both the empty and full boxes in my shed will support this claim. Although I shoot it in a SAUM I do know of many others that use it in a straight .284

In all of my barrels, the round is best shot between 15 and 10 thou JAM. Because JAM and JUMP could be slightly subjective, the meassurement would be as per the Alex Wheeler method... (there is a youtube video).

The latest batch is slightly shorter and fatter than a few samples ago. People that therefore found them undersized before would be happy with the current .284 meassurements. The new batch sort and meassure brilliantly... I sometimes wonder why I bother and have been know to load them out of the boxes, without any batching for a Queens.

Given that you'll be running them a little slower than a SAUM I would say that a 1 in 8 might be the best twist option for stabalisation. Do you know what your SG values are for your current load ?

Lastly, if your looking for cheap 183's the VRA is selling 1,000 box quantities for $650...and they're available.

I'm another fan of the 183 Sierras. I got bored with trying to batch them or test them on the Juenke as they all measured so well and are shooting well. I am running around .005 to .010" jam in my current 8.5" barrels and have used them in an 8.75" barrel (in 7 SAUM) but suspect this twist wouldn't be enough in cold weather. I think your current 8.25" barrel should be fine in most conditions except maybe very cold weather.

Today I used some of the older thinner 183 SMks that Albert refers to. They were running at 2775fps in a 8.5T barrel and held the 6 ring at 1000. Temperature was about 20C and height about 30m ASL, so your 8.25T should be fine in any situation in Australia.

Feeling more encouraged to get some now!!
Have some Berger’s 184 to try now.
I should have the new barrel fitted soon.
8.25 twist.
Has anyone compared against Berger’s 184?

Never tried the Sierra's sorry but I'm a big fan of the Berger 184s.

Now that you have been shooting the 183s for sometime how are they going? I have a 32” Bartlein 8.5T barrel in my win 284 and was wondering will I have any twist rate limitations with this projectile? I’m aware that Sierra recommend 8T but was keen to know of others experiences with 8.5T???
There’s a reason for everything!

When they first came out....I got some to try. The barrel on my gun was a 9 twist at the time. No load tuning no development etc....010" off the lands and 55gr of H4831sc. They shot a flat .400" for groups. That was for four 5 shot groups and that was in 21F degree temperatures. They flew fine for me at long range also.

Guys shooting button rifled 9 twist barrels had accuracy issues but of all the guys I talked to over here that shot a cut rifled barrel in a 9 twist seem to be fine. This was when the bullets first came out. That is because of uniformity of the twist difference between a cut barrel and a button barrel. I was running them at just under 2900fps. for reference also.

At 2800fps I get a min. twist calc of 1-8.236. At 3000fps I get a min. twist calc of 8.662. Depending on how I run my numbers for 2900fps I get 8.591 twist min. If you take the 8.236 and the 8.662 and add them together and divide by 2 you get 8.449.

Again the bullets will fly out of a good 9 twist barrel. You might give up a little on the bc numbers but it will work.

I know in my conversations with someone in the know....we are on the same page. I say 8.5 to be on the safe side. 8.25 or a 8 twist won't hurt ya. I don't see the need for anything faster than a 8.

Later, Frank

Thanks Frank,

I have one of your 8.25 twist barrels in a straight.284 and they shoot awesome !!
The load is with
The load is
2213sc: 54.2 gr
CCI br2
0.025” otl
2770 fps
10 shots at 500 yds printed a 2” group, which for me is very good.
Any faster and they didn’t group that well
I will try to run them in a 7 saum, once i get another tube, which will be 8 twist

Cheers. Pablo
