CCI BR4 Primers

#1 Postby loneranger » Sun Jun 19, 2022 8:14 pm

Has anyone been having issues with BR4 Primers ?
I have been experiencing more and more primers failing to fire from the same batch of primers. At first I thought my firing pin spring was the issue so I changed it and also checked that I wasn’t over sizing my cases. Measurements were fine as I am only knocking the shoulders back by 0.5 - 1.0 thousands of an inch so I can only presume my primers are duds.
Going to try a new batch of BR4s to see if that is the issue but I am curious to hear if anyone else has had issues ?

I have seen two shooters with this problem lately. They were using CCi Magnum primers.

I use 450's and have the odd ftf, I always put it down to improper seating. I use a Forster seater and admit to getting lazy on the handle

I’m having same issues with BR4’s and 450’s on new cases so don’t use them for the first firing.

I haven't had this issue with the BR4's but have with the 450's (more misfires than can be a coincidence). I ended up swapping from the 450's to something else and have had no issues since.

What seating tool are you using.
Any chance you could post the batch number so others can compare.

I use a Lee hand primer and also a new Lyman. The Lyman has a significant amount of leverage compared to the Lee so I thought I was crushing the primers and went back to the Lee handprimer - it has much less leverage and better feel. Been using it for years and never had problem with primers, but alas I still had lots of primers not igniting these past 5-6 months.
I am suspecting that I have a bad batch as the same primers have not fired from time to time in 2 other rifles one of which is a pretty new Sako.
Anyone else experiencing problems with BR4s…?

Thanks for the feedback guys, seems I am not the loneranger (excuse the pun) when it comes to this problem. I actually read that CCI make the cups of some of their small primers are little harder and a few years ago this same problem occurred. Come to think about it, I think the batch that I am using would be at least 2-3years ago, so I reckon that’s the problem.

Get yourself a decent priming tool... You don't have issues with Fed or Rem primers as the primers are softer in the cup making it easier to seat the primer and its anvil properly...
Seen this many times....

Anyone that has this supposed bad batch ill gladly take them...

Having used a few (Sinclair, Centuary 21, RCBS and Lee) it would be hard to recommend any above Frankford Arsnal kit. Adjustable, tray fed, does L and S and comes with a full set of shell holders.
Price isn't too bad either.

The dodgy batch I had (over 5 years ago now) were L23U12.
I've still got them if you want them Wal

Thanks guys appreciate the feedback. The batch no that’s given me problems is B02Z4 in case anyone else has had problems with that batch…
