Front rest board

#1 Postby charlieboy » Sun Jul 24, 2022 8:33 am

Ĺooking to start into FTR. And going to fabricate a front board for under the bipod.
It is 600 wide so I am allowed a 700mm wide board.
This may be cumbersome to bring to the mound, so I wondered about hinging it in the middle?
Allowable?
Unwarranted?
Fraught with pitfalls?

Wouldn't say it's particularly cumbersome. I used a piece of 32mm ply about 600mm wide. Sure, it was sizeable to cart around, but you're going to make two trips to the mound either way.

The use of ‘tables’ i.e. a single flat solid surface extending under both front
rest and rear bag is prohibited. Carpet or similarly flexible matting may be
placed under the front rest and rear bag. Separate flat boards and or plates
not exceeding the dimensions of the individual rests by 51mm on a given
side may also be placed under the front rest and rear bag. In the case of a
bipod the board or plate may be as wide as necessary to accommodate the
bipod at its widest point, but not be more than 30cm front to rear. It is not
permitted to provide tracks for the guidance of bipod feet. No levelling
screws or protrusions are allowed on these boards or plates. They must be
flat on the top and bottom.

651mm wide (51mm wider than your bipods widest setting. Thats what the "on a given side" means. 1 side, not both)
You could hinge it as long as the hinges don't protrude.
It really isn't hard. Cut the plate no more than 300mm x (your bipod width +50mm.)
Cover it with whatever material you want as long as it doesn't breach the 'flatness' requirement. Towel, carpet tile, cordura etc.

I have an approx 700mm board for use with my dolphin bipod. I’ve cut a slot in it for a handle and put it in the fold of my shooting mat (it has handles) when I’m walking up to the mound. Works a treat

My ICFRA text says "any given side" I took that to mean that at its 600 limit the bipod is 50 mm from any edge. But of course only 12 inches or 300mm wide
I dont want to play semantics. And its not my intention to piss people off.
Does anyone else have a definition that has been tested.
Like Rogue22 I have a Dolphin and I note his board is aprox 700 wide. The second part of the question regarding hinging seams ok though :D

Work on 50mm wider than the overall width of your bipod. That's the accepted rule and how I and many other experienced FTR shooters understand the rule. You're welcome to do and try whatever you like, just be prepare to justify to an RO.

I have no problem with the 50mm overall wider, (and that definition is simpler) I just wanted to know where to cut the board / plate and if hinging it then made it two boards and not allowable.

You can hinge it as long as there is no protrusion or you can have 2 plates, or more than 2 as long as all are flat top and bottom and none exceed the size limit.
