Locking Lugs Lube

#1 Postby 6.5x55ai » Mon Sep 11, 2017 11:05 am

What are people using to lubricate locking lugs.

My small bottle of liquid molybdenum disulfide is finally running out after ~ 30 years.

Did try Dow Molykote grease but didn't like its lubricating effectiveness.

Have considered GA50 grease and Yamaha Moly.

I use Nulon XL90 on mine. Was recommended by the gunsmith who built my F open rifle. I've never used anything else so can't claim to be an expert on the topic.

Morey's EPL Bigfoot Grease. Has the highest pound out rating on the Timkin scale, sticks like shit to a blanket, best stuff I have used so far for bolt lugs and barrel threads..

Seems to my small mind ya need one of the greases with "EP" additives ......... and stickiness is good too.

As Brett mentioned , Moreys EPL grease is high pressure high temp etc , we use the whole range with all my machinery for work I buy it in 20 kg - $400 and just refill grease syringe I got with my Kelby action :D

I've begged a number of 5cc stent syringes with screw on caps from hospital nurses in my time. They're good for a number of greasing possibilities.

Plenty of satisfactory options but one thing I would like to clarify.

Molykote is a whole family of lubricants. Many of them are for specific purposes and do not contain Molybdenum DiSulphide which the name tends to suggest.
Some of them are basically a Silicone Grease intended more for O ring seals especially in the presence of water and or where very low outgassing is needed. I use a lot of this type but it would be a poor choice on bolt lugs.

I am sure others in their range would be quite satisfactory.

I'd be wary of using that as it can rust. Loaded with sulphur compounds for metal cutting purposes.

Ive alway used the tetra grease whatever it is. This thread started me thinking of all the different types of grease available. What about the high copper content neverseize grease for this purpose?

A moly grease may sound better if any where to make its way into the barrel. An interesting topic with so many options.
