Coloured reticules

Post by Razer »

There was some comments made on the forum sometime ago about putting a white centre in the black for scope shooters.
This was rejected, basically because it was deemed to cause problems for TR shooters.
If we cannot get a white centre(6 ring) then why not get a coloured reticule?
I am now finding it exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, to keep focus on my cross hairs as I lose them against the black centre.
I had a scope with an illuminated reticule but this just turns to black on the target so that is out.(Was also an expensive lesson to learn)
Is it possible to make, say, a yellow, lime green, blue or even red coloured reticule(iridescent!) that would stand out on the black?
We all accept black because that is a carry over from hunting scopes where we shoot against multi-coloured backgrounds/game.
With many scopes now being dedicated target scopes why not colour the reticule so as to get a contrast against black target faces?
Peter Smith may be able to give an expert opinion on this. [-o<

How many other scope shooters would benefit from this as it would need a reasonable number of orders to get a scope maker to introduce this should it be possible?

Ray, when I did TR I asked for white spotters in the black because I was colour blind to certain shades of red on black. Sure made me concentrate on getting bulls when the request to change could not be met. So in the sense you are talking about, its still an eyesight problem that disadvantages you compared to other competitors. Eagle eyes were brought in for tr shooters and in my view they may as well use a scope, so why not assist scope shooters where it is possible too? You make a valid point. Maybe removable aim points could be stuck on and a little rejigging of squads could smooth the process.

We use a 25mm/32mm white patch in the middle.

That's a good thought Dave. But I wouldn't change the squad, just contact the butts before and after that shooter. This is already allowed for shooters who request a different spotter. You could have a suitable centre that could be attached quickly using velcro.

In the longer term (when F-Class shooters outnumber TR :D ), hopefully we can look at some sort of compromise aiming mark that is both scope and iron sight friendly. If the super V and Bull were grey as shown below, the blackness of the aiming mark would be reduced only very slightly, but it would be a huge improvement for scope shooters.

5-20x50 Trijicon probably doesn't quite cut it for F-Class use and it's unlikely you'd be able to find someone to bump the scope by x2 or similar.

https://www.trijicon.com/na_en/products/product2.php?id=AccuPoint&mid=5-20x50

and it looks like Docter dropped their Docter Point Regular Lens Reticle Illuminator but it was probably too big anyway at 3.5MOA...mind you that could be an improvement on some of my groups. Unless you wan to go TR style and frame the whole target like back at 900y?

At Hornsby Rifle range all targets have a white Super V, no complaints from TR shooters.

Fortunately Matt, Hornsby Range is one of the enlightened ranges where F Class outnumbers the sling and irons shooters.

Alan, I keep staring at that target. I close my eyes and it is still there. Could you please mark the frame with a supercentre scoring disc so I can imprint my brain with a positive outcome. :D

Its apparent from what people are doing it the West by what Bindi says, and what Matt says in NSW, that people are doing it in harmony. It seems a logical step to me with the Velcro and a call to the butts if others won’t come at it, and maybe reconsideration by the NRAA. After all rules are made for harmony.

G'day All,
if my understanding is correct, and please let everyone know if I'm wrong....
The TR shooters use the outside of the aiming mark and F class shooters use the inside of the aiming mark to aim ...................so why can't the F class shooters have a white super v or as Alan F suggested a grey scoring ring, maybe the 6 ring?
FWIW, AlanF, a great suggestion!

Ned, I think you have a good point, because the aiming mark, even if white in the centre, would tend to draw the eye to the centre. I know in the past, when I shot TR and I used an Eagle Eye, the white spotter itself would draw my eye to it and I was made conscious of a possible sighting error. Something without the Eagle Eye I never noticed. So I'm thinking that a large white area in the middle would not distract as much as a large white spotter on the edge of the bull when using a large Eagle Eye. Maybe those with optical knowledge could share their views.

It is very similar to the old F-Open 10 ring target actually. I'm surprised Matt didn't give it more of a cheer. He won many Queens shoots on a target like that.

Yes it looks like the old champ target but mainly brings memories of small fields and big winning margins 8)

Personally I'd like just a white X ring and that's it. There's a club at Swanbourne that is trailing this I believe and I'm going to push for it in my club.

When I was young with good albeit spectacles corrected eyesight, I could see spotters on targets with my naked eye out to 800 yards. Unfortunately, I could also see the spotter in the target & in those days when all were the same white (locally at least), I would, as the shoot progressed, centre my sights on the spotter. Took my coaches quite a time to work out what was happening.

Musing, I'm starting to get a good belly laugh up about these perceived needs of F classers. We want the championship target resurrected in some way because it's easier to aim at for some, but we want ET speeds dumbed down so those who make quick decisions are handicapped back to the field. Seems like with all this technology available, somebody could design a Grand Theft Auto game for F classers so we didn't have to experience all those real world conditions that contribute to not succeeding.

John, lets put it on Peter to come up with that Grand Theft F Class game. It would sure beat crossword puzzles to keep the brain active in old age. Fantastic =D> :D
