You actually left out 5.56mm. Add that in and the average will be near as dammit to ideal .

Thanks to all. There,s a bit of a hold up in getting this all up as my gunsmith has to do all these barrels for the Palma team. At the moment I,m using a Match Barrel throughted out for 200+gn,ers with HBC,s jumping a bunch, after a 6BR it,d make you cry. Still the fishing not that hot either. Bugga.

My apologies for (a) not seeing this comment earlier and (b) still not having done the testing.

The reason for the delay in the testing is that my 6mm barrel has been a little inconsistent with velocity, and I've been trying to find the right powder and load just with one projectile (107 SMK). When I achieve a reasonable ES then I have 4 projectiles to test and compare : SMK 107, Berger 105, Amax 108? and of course Copperhead 103.

Alan any more on your quest with 6.5-6X47L stuff? A barrel is in the near future( 2 In fact) so any more info is always good. Looking at a go in Canberra. are Copperheads a must?

Chris, I did some more experimenting with projectiles at the Brisbane shoot with my 6x47. My rifle prefered the Copperheads and so far nearly every time I have used the copperheads I have got a 98. I think it shot the Sierras just as well, but showed a bit more pressure. I think I usualy got 94-95 with the sierra ,but the wind and possibly longer distance (and brain farts on my behalf) probably held the scores back from the Copperheads . My rifle definitley did not like the Bergers, thin jacket or thick, jammed in or backed out but then other shooters have done great with them, so as usual, all barrels have their own personal tastes.

Due to my barrel (and rear bag, mat & ammo) falling out of the back of the wifes car last week , the barrel has been pulled out,rechambered and put back in another gun. When it was 28.5" long, it prefered to be shot at about 3070 fps, but as it is now about 27" long, I will load it to shoot about 3050 fps. Most people with a 30" barrel seems to load them to about 3080 fps.
I think if you load with 2209 to get about 3080 fps with 103 Copper heads, you wont need to do much experimenting. Just have a quick play with seating depths.
As for primers, I have not experimented, just used CCI 450s as it is what everyone seems to use. One quirk I have noticed is that occaisionaly, I get one primer which is cratered realy badly, way out, but the shot hits low. has anyone else found this?
Chris, Make sure you bring the 6x47 down to the Sydney and Gosford shoot OK.

Love it all guys, 6-6x47 is soon, bribe has been that I let Southwell use my Mastin Tracker to play with the Palmer barrels he is setting up for the Ausi team( they are all P-Barnards, Trueflites, all from the same steel billet) He gets em 50/10-50/9 @ 600yds. in a sling, then talks about maybe barrel tuners!!! unreal.
I found a 6MM BR seating die that Ir,d never used as i had a micrometer seater, and i one pass it resizes 6.5-6 in one pass. I then have to just nip down the neck to my chosen grip. How easy is that?

I built up a 6x47l a couple of years ago.

It did exactly what you have said. Every so often a low shot. I never checked the primer though.
My theory was the small primer was right near the margin for reliable ignition.

Barrel is in went with a ladder 37-39gn. 2209, had some 105gn A-max before hitting 3000 f/s they started to blow up, 1in 3 puffed at 2950. These were hard in for fire forming. Tried some 107 SMK at 3000 no problems, but hard in they worn,t much into grouping. Q how far infront of the barrel do you place the chroni? Next will try some 105 Burgers and Lapua,s all info gratefully received.

Chris, I place the crono about 15 feet in front of the barrel. It makes it pretty hard to read the numbers, but it saves getting wacky readings from powder granuals going through the screens.
I have heard the A maxs have a thin jacket and blow a bit easier than the others. I pumped my copper heads up to 3150 fps (VV N550 accuracy sucked) with no blow ups, but got better accuraccy at 3050 fps. My barrel must be a bit looser than yours as I,m not up to primer popping pressure, though with Sierras they were cratered. I wouldnt be suprised if the barrel loosens up a bit after 100 rounds, then you might be able to get the velocity node you want. Otherwise, the Copperheads give lower pressure and others have said the 105 Scenars give lower pressure as well, (they are a tad less diameter than standard 6mms which might suit your barrel). My 7mm true flite is a much tighter barrel than other 284s which wont allow me much speed, maybe your 6mm is the same I know a few shooters who are shooting the scenars at 3250 fps and have shot them up to 3350 fps in bigger cases without blow ups..

Chris / Rod, when I was using 6x47l, I used 40g of 2209 with 105 scennars. This was very accurate except as I said earlier, an unexplained low shot once in a while. I jumped the projectiles. Try various settings until the group shrinks, ie, 10, 20, 30, 40 thou off. It works for me.

Pressure was up there but still quite safe...in my rifle. I never chrono'd that load.

Had a play today, nice bit of wind but was looking at seating depths, got 105gn. Scenars down to 1/2in. vertical at 600yds.(Brown,s cows wind) but no speed?? 39.2gn. 2209 av. 2966fps, no preasure signs. Might start a new thread about speed/ accuratcy etc.

I would start testing those COPPER HEAD projectiles if you are bringing your 6mm to S.A. Queens. You know we have moving targets.
