308 1/10 twist

Post by peter t »

Hi to all F/standard shooters would be greatfull for some info on 308
my son has taken up f/s and I will be loading for him
Question (1) will a 1/10 twist stabilise 155 gn bullets from 300m to 800m
(2) he has a Savage Tactical rifle (new) with a 26 inch barrel
(3) will 2208 or 2206H be a better powder
(4) what would be a suitable load to beging with
(5) using remington casses, CCI primers, sierra bullets.
(6) any idear off the speed from a 26 inch barrel
I also shoot F/standard but with a 223, so any info to get him started would be greatly appreciated from 308 shooters.
Thanks

In my opinion a 1 in 10 inch twist is much too fast for very best accuracy with a 308 shooting 155 grain projectiles. Its more aimed at 200 + grain projectiles.

They will overstabilize giving loss of accuracy. But it is certainly useable.

Best to look at what the TR people are using. But dont be put off using it.

Overstabilization causes a loss of accuracy at long range. some erratic projectile behavior, and often more windage.

As to load. Again why not simply copy what TR people are loading.

I have seen a lot of people attempt to improve on the 'standard club loads' for 308/155 grain projectiles but eventually most come back to about the ubiquitous 42 grains of 2206 for best results on the target. Powders are changing, however, so you may need to experiment a little.

In a 26 inch barrel I would guess about 2800 - maybe even a bit less.

Peter T,
10" twist barrels work very well for 155 grn bullets, I fit quite a few for "F" class std. There have been several "F" std Queens Prizes won with this twist.
2206H is a better powder than 2208 for the .308 with 155grn bullets, in my opinion. Being a little faster, it will suit a 26" barrel better too, it is cooler burning than 2208 so barrel life should be better.
Savage barrels are rough inside but generally shoot well. You should have no problem getting 2850 fps which will be fine to 1000 yds.
Starting load:- 42.5 to 43 grn. There is NO GAIN in running HOT loads except to decrease barrel life & reduce safety margins.

1:10 Twist

Peter T

I have 1:10 twist barrels fitted by KHGS(Keith Hills) which will shoot 1" groups @ 300 yds.

Keith fitted the first 32" for me in 2003,and I had a lot of wins with it.

My barrels have a longer throat,so I can use 190 Sierras for 10/11/1200 yds.

I simlpy change the seating depth and charge weight between 155 and 190.

According to the ADI Hand Loading book 39 to 43 of BM2. But your velocity will be about 150 fps lower than if you used 2208.
