Omark MAB Barrels

Post by ADDS222 »

Anyone still shooting the MAB Omark barrels with the integral locking lugs that the VRA sells? Assuming these barrels are button rifled, not forged, they should shoot well? (.308 1/13T 26'') (.223 1/8T 26'') Seem like good value for money. Any thoughts?? :) :) :)

No reason to think the barrels won't shoot well. They are, however, a bit short @ 26 inch length to get good MV for shooting the longest ranges.

ADDS222 a few years ago I bought a few Omark barrels when the VRA was letting them go cheap, for experimental purposes. One, had the lugs cut off and fitted to my wife’s muzzy having been given a mild taper lap because she felt uncomfortable holding with a long barrel. The barrel finished at 25 inches to accommodate lapping. She shoots prone.

At the Horsham prize meeting two years ago she was copping a bit of ribbing for the short barrel and the apparent rifle lift on firing. It was a hot field with ex Queens winners, Australian team shooters, State team shooters and the Wimmera shooters who as team members have won about 4 Victorian championships on the trot. At the end of the day she had the only card with 200 and had shot possible at every range, i.e. 3,5,6,and 7 hundred yards and opened up with another possible the next day. She continued to shoot well on the second day but plonked a bull on the wrong target at the last range dropping her back to about 7th. This barrel has shot possibles at 900 and 1000 yards but is superior over the shorts.

Last year the barrel was removed for longer True Flight barrel, but her scores have not been as good. This coming out. Perhaps rifle balance is an issue worth considering.

The load the Omark liked was 45.3 grains of 2206H behind a Dyer 155 with a cci primer. The projectile was jumped about .008”. This load was worked up with careful consideration of pressure signs.
