223 projectiles

Post by peter t »

Giday Matt
I think you are talking to the converted on this forum about the ability of the 223 's. I also want to be able to compete with the 308's on equal terms projectile wise, be it with what ever brand 223 projectile equals the B C of there best 155 gn projectile.
Talking about it here is great but will it get anything happening ??? There must be hundreds of 223 shooters in NSW, without including the other states why don't YOU start a petition with 223 shooters on ozfclass site and see how many 223 users are willing too put there name on the list. Then maybe the petition could be pass onto the revelant body if there is enough intrest in another 223 projectile. Just a thought.
Here's two names to get the ball rolling for another pill

I remember maybe 1 year ago some comments made by Rick Scoones (sorry - spelling may be erronous) commonly called 'Schooner' who was involved with the planning of the Palma team strategy. Best talk to him - I think he is in WA.

I, personally, have topscored at 1000 y against 308's using a 223 and consider the gap was narrow but the newer 308 projectile does widen it.

My 1000 y shooting is infrequent and is usually carried out at an elevation of about 2500 ft and the weather is never really cold and no doubt this is a factor.

There is something else in favour of the 308 at long range. The 223 has to use quite high twist rates to use a long bullet while the 308 can benefit from a minimum twist rate. In my opinion, high twist rates accentuate problems of bullet quality and wind buffeting which probably degrades accuracy a little and introduce some irregularities. It certainly increases fouling problems and decreases barrel life somewhat.
Most records are shot from slow twist barrels and I dont think it is a coincidence.

To sum up my feelings - 223's using 80 grain SMKs are closer than many think in performance to the 308 but there is a gap - especially at the very long ranges. Some of the 223 shooters I know of who win against stiff competition are very experienced and among the best wind readers around.

I cannot resist. My interpretation of Wowser is closest to

The Australian writer C.J. Dennis defined it thus: 'Wowser: an ineffably pious person who mistakes this world for a penitentiary and himself for a warder'.

In this context, I believe we are seeing an upsurge - almost a sad throw back to Victorian Morality pseudo. All being reinforced with politically correctness. And where did I see a new description of that ??

'Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional,
illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream
media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to
pick up a turd by the clean end.'

Sorry for the diversion and hope it offends no one unless they deserve it !!!
