I see that the .223 has a strong following.
Is the "normal" barrel length 30" for this calibre.

I would go as far as saying if you can get one finnished in 30" (that is to say chambered and crowned) you will be on a winner. These little fellows, in my opinion, need all the help they can get in the way of velocity to be competitive at the longs....having said that, I have seen may shoot quite well that are only 28." I would only prefer to go this length after re-crown and chamber.
