Been thinking of a new rig for F-Open out to 600 or so and saving my .284 win for the longer ranges.
I have a 6br at the moment and love shooting it, I but think that the rifle itself is not quite up to the highest level of competition.
So for a serious medium distance competition rifle, I am tossing up between a hot 6mm and a mild 7mm. Most likely a 7-08ai or similar.
Main points of interest would be ........ High level of accuracy. Low recoil, ammo cost and barrel life.
Your thoughts are welcome..
+3 for the 6.5x47. I have seen quite a few of them and am yet to see an inaccurate one, or one which the owner had complaints about.
With a 6BR for 300yds or club shoots
a 6.5x47 for 5-700 or longer in good conditions
and a 284 for the tricky conditions, or longer range, I think you would have a gun for all occaisions.
Ive been toying with an idea about building a 7mm08(or similar wildcat) down the track. If you run the numbers for it with a 175gr SMK, you get windrift thats close to what the 6.5x47 and alike will get you and barrel life should be good aswell. Only thing is accuracy, it should be good though.
I'd still probs go the 6.5x47L as its just a really good proven lil round for competition use and it just shoots!!!!
Brad Y's 260 imp 30 will be interesting to see but. Im looking forward to seeing how well it shoots

I dont know how fast you will be able to push a 7-08 with that size bullet. I know accuracy trumps over everything, but theres no point running a heavy bullet it the case wont do it justice. 6.5x47 and 140gr bullets for example. Unless your a top notch shooter and use a 308 to beat 7mm's like Adam Davies. I still think in this discussion for mid range you arent going to do anything better than the 6.5x47L. You could look at a 6BRX but I think the 6.5x47L is the perfect all rounder for mid range work.
The 7-08ai is suppose to give an extra 100fps over the standard 7-08.
Loading the 168 Berger VLD with a long cut throat I thought it might be possible to run in the 2800 fps range with a 28" to 30" barrel.
How does this compare to a common load out of a 6.5x47?
