OK, I give in, I'm out-philosophised.
To get back to something along the lines of Jason's original query, does anyone know if it's easy enough to get a spent 30-'06 length case out through the port on an RPA Quadlock action?
Not sure exactly Barry but I had a 280AI on a dual port Bat and the port was tiny. Spent cartridges came out fine on that.
Jason - two guys I shoot against up here have 30-284's but developed them before this new range of projectiles came around. They originally throated them for the 210VLD but came back to the 180-185 class of projectiles. It seems a very good cartridge and very long barrel life and forgiving load development.
Could be a good option and I agree with Ian here - If you like the idea and have justification (or a belief) then go with it.
On cases - we have found one of the more recent batches of Lapua to be very tough again - no measurable case head expansion at reasonable loads so if you are lucky you might get a great batch of brass.

Not sure on Batch numbers but the shipment just before this one. I would bet Lapua has pulled out all QA stops recently after the last year of -ve feedback. Personally I would take a gamble with the new batch at the QRA store. We have some on their way and will take a good look at them in the near future.
On dies - personally I would go the 30-284 Shehane and make my own but considering there are a few off the shelf options I would chase them down. redding and RCBS do some.
john,
if it is to the base of the neck it should be a bit more than the 30/06 Ackley.
cases must vary a fair bit,.
years ago I found that a 30/06 necked down to 7mm with an improved shoulder held the same ammount of powder as a 284 case, to the base of the neck.
the 280 Ackley held a bit more.
just my mileage at the time.
keep safe,
bruce.
280 Rem listed at 67gr of H2O the AI version is not listed but could be calculated. Aaronraad states it as being approx 70gr and this is 3gr up on the capacity on the 280R so sounds about right as it is a similar 3gr increase for the 30-06AI.
As there are two versions of the 280AI there will be some difference in case capacities. Look up the SAAMI case dimensional data and work it out from there. Nosler got the 280R brought before the SAAMI committee and approved as their AI version so I would go with that version.
John it seems you asked a complex question!
