QLD Queens - What does it all mean?

Hi all,
As a relative newcomer to the sport I often find myself scratching my head. Why do all the shooting organisations think every one knows what they are talking about. Is it a deliberate attempt to expose the newcomer?
Anyway, my questions (probably better directed at QRA but here I am) are:

What's the difference between the Open and Trophy only entry? (apart from $35)

Duncan Club Team Match Shoots? I can kind of guess. Do you need 3 people from your home club or can stragglers club together? How many rounds involved?

State of Origin Team Match? I could guess at that one too, but how many in a team and who selects the team? (and again, how many rounds?)

Zillman DRA teams :?:

and how many rounds? (I kind of need to bring them with me so knowing is rather useful)

Simply to get my answers? Absolutely John (and I've asked)
That would not, however, get the answers for anyone else, nor raise the issue on a wider forum.

As a newbie I've spent more time observing than doing, and some of what I see is not a good advert.
IMO producing a flyer that is aimed only at those in the know isn't too helpful.

Fair enough, but all the information (except maybe prizes only or cash plus prizes entries) is in the handbook that comes out with scorecards, notices etc in the competitor pack. Those who've shot before are pretty much on top of that stuff. From the State Association perspective (& it's not only QRA), there's only so much that you can fit into an entry flyer without going beyond the four pages most use.

It takes some time to understand some of the things in shooting,as it does for most things that are new,usually the first port of call,should be your club mates.If they don't know,they should be able to find someone that does.There may be some isolated clubs,but they do belong to District Rifle Associations,someone there will know and be able to help.

I've not shot before John, nor have many others so handing the information out with score cards just shows a lack of thought. I need to know how much this is going to cost before I can go any further.

I don't know about you, but this is going to cost me somewhere around the $1000 mark, I need to know which side of the $1000 and by how much before I submit my nomination.

Flyers,,,,, now that shows the roots of the problem. We aren't limited to mail shots and printing out flyers anymore, the website has oodles of space.

Clearly you don't think it's necessary to make this information available, perhaps you already know the answers. That's fine, but until I know the answers, I can't submit my nomination. I very much doubt I'm alone.

Hi Tim,

I too had to look hard to decipher what matches were being run, as there are some fun team matches being held mid way.

I looked at last years results to see what was being shot.

In regard to full entry or trophy entry, this has been a traditional thing. Basically the goal of competing is to take home the trophy, however as a second incentive you may wish to get some cash prize money too. That cash prize money comes from the additional entry fee.

In regard to your comment about not having shot before, do you mean at Belmont range, or do you mean at any QRA rifle range. If you haven't shot a queens series before, may I suggest competing at an Open Prize Meeting first, to gather an understanding of how shooting is run, and more importantly how you are to conduct yourself at the event. When you arrive at a state level event you will be squadded with all levels of shooter, that all know what is expected of them on each day. Do you know how to score for a TR shooter, as well as a FClass shooter?

Enjoy your shooting, there is a great bunch of shooters in Mackay, even a South Aussie too who I'm sure would be happy to help.

and thanks for the call John. Sorry for the short farewell, I'm at work.

I appreciate all the points, I shot the NQ Queens Bart so hopefully I won't have any dramas on the line. I score target with reciprocal respect. If they say bulls eye 5 and V for people shooting on rests I offer the same courtesy and say 6 and X when they shoot. It's only fair :wink:

I take your point John, there's a lot of history behind it all. Perhaps even more reason to get it all written down and posted on the website before the history is lost.
I'd suggest the minimal information that needs to be provided is the number of rounds involved in the "fun shoots". The rest can be played from the cuff, but popping home for another 2 dozen rounds is a bit of an issue.

Thanks for the feedback, Tim. I wear a couple of hats - QRA person in some circumstances & an individual in others, usually when I'm on the net & I found myself morphing from the latter to the former today & I was worried that I'd shortchanged you on the phone call.

Great outcome guys.

Just a little advice from experience, many years ago I made a small change to my reloads which rendered 50 unusable because the shoulder got pushed out!

The solution now is to take twice as much, which leaves some to play with.

If you have a bad range, ditch that packet and try another lot!

2 optional sighters & 15 to count, done twice.

Sweepstake, ie a percentage of the entry is returned to the higher scoring shooters in the following classifications:

Target Rifle (ungraded)
F Standard (ungraded)
F Open

F/TR might be catered for depending on entries. Remember 2014 is the first year for this discipline.

Essentially it is an opportunity for shooters without access to an 1000 yard range to get some practice in, with a bit of cash side interest.

Timing as per SSRs
