I would just ignore the restrictions until they are enforced... so long as you are shooting short mags, SAUMz and Ai its a bit hard to go way over. Just dont use any long magnums (eg 300 win mag etc) or lapua 338 sized cases (eg 300 norma, 30/338 lapua)

I know in Connaught there were random checks and anyone who got medals was tested as well. No one failed out of 400 shooters. I think the vast majority of shooters will try to stay within the rules, even though we agree some are BS. While getting a speeding ticket is no big deal, getting caught cheating red handed by going way over velocity limits will make you look like a bit of a goose (or worse) to your shooting mates, but I think slightly nudging the limits if that is where your barrel shoots will likely be treated like people driving 2kmh over the limit.
ummm actually i just did some calculations and 4500 joules (3300ft/lbs) is WAY low, I am glad I dont have to shoot there ! The limit in Qld and Bendigo is, i think 4750 joules (3500 ft/lbs) AND the general limit at NSW ranges is 5675 joules (4182 ft/lbs).
So my next 300 wsm with 230gr pills at 2700 say,, from a 27in barrel, if it works out, is about 5000 joules. no good for the restricted ranges but fine for most rural ranges and match rifle meets.
A saum is ok for 4750 joules but for 4500 ?? I would run a 284 i think. You are right you would need to load down a saum to fit the profile...
Been there done that with the 183gr in both 284W and SAUM....the energy limit for 183gr is 2857fps,vs 180gr of 2882fps, a much wider window in the latter for any ES error. You might want to seriously consider those lighter bullets to widen that window. Your tolerance over the limit is 1 shot in 20 and disqualification will apply to the whole team......and they threaten to dismantle and weigh components for compliance.......!
A small glimmer of hope in that we are having a few issues with LabRadar data and it maybe that the results could be challenged. I await a report from the suppliers regarding weird data output.....!
Thanks Audax, however I won't be putting my hope in a potential measurement error.... At the end of the day, whether we agree with them or not, rules exsist for a reason and I'll be keeping a long way from the limit.

Has anyone with a SAUM made a serious effort to find a load in the 2800s? I've seen very good accuracy in the high 2700s with a 284, so why wouldn't the SAUM have similar accuracy with lighter loads.
Above 2820fps a .284W is still going to have shortish primer pocket life. At $200 per 100 for .284W cases, I'd rather be utilising the magnum base and getting longer brass life for the same 180gn MV.
In my mind, it doesn't make sense financially or otherwise to re-barrel/re-chamber and re-tool for the given situation.
A lower node must be achievable with a slower cooler powder and that should be better on barrel life too than hotter ar2209 loads.
A huge advantage of lower nodes is that they're a little wider so that's a great positive for variable atmospheric changes over the barrel life.
Another option might be to run 195gn bullets? They will be slower but the chamber pressure will still be high enough for a clean burn and the .284's wont be able to achieve the same, economically with that bullet................. maybe??? I'm speculating.

When I was breaking in my saum and fireforming cases, there was a lower node with 175gr sierras, accuracy was very good velocity however was only 2630fps..

I Have been playing with reduced loads in a SAUM to basically mimic a 284 speed. I have one at the moment with 53.5 2209 and 180 hybrid at 2860. has ES of 12 and a few weeks back it shot 120.11 at 900m. It is only 28 inch too. I also have another Barrel running at 2890 with SAUM and it shoots great too, a few hours spent finding powder node in 2800-2900 was very easy to do ..
