I have been really enjoying the discussion about this subject, some not all that well informed. GRC welcomes all who would like to shoot on ,and talk about Electronics. We have the range in going order, electronic targets available to shoot at, 10 am on Saturdays.
GRC, as a self help group, small in number, very well lead by our Captain Neville Trevena, saw Electronics as the future, 150 year old technology is not common in many fields of endeavour nowadays. For the sceptics, we had faith in the Kongsberg system, as presented to us, not wanting to, or able to reinvent it. We also believe we can deal with modification as required, with the help of Kongsberg.
From our experience, after 4 weeks of constant use, we are so pleased ,700 and 900m are going to be installed post haste. From a practical point of view, with a 12.15pm start,most shooters have fired 3 ten shot matches, some more, with lots of social chat, and afternoon tea etc, and have left the range by 4pm
After a month of use , electronic targets at Anakie.

I hope that when you're lounging around drinking tea, you're sparing a thought for the rest of us. It was about 10 degrees and very windy on the 900yd mound at Rosedale last weekend! I can't understand why you don't get more Bacchus Marsh visitors - it must have been close to snow up on their hill recently

There are two things I would like in conjunction with electronic targets..
Maybe these are already available - but if not I wonder if, while you are still involved purchasing the longer range targets - this is a good time to put it to the manufacturer. Since you can point to these targets as a showcase for Australian fullbore shooting, I imagine there would be a lot of incentive for the manufacturer.
1/ A means for users to create their own 'targets' - ie specify sizes, values etc.. This will be stored as a file and it should be possible to create these easily.
2/ A means of reading out information for all shooters information for a day or more in some standard form. Once this is available, it then becomes a straightforward job for someone to write software that would do all the prize lists for a complex shoot at the touch of a button.
Shoot organizers could then get down to serious shooting instead of running around getting things to run smoothly.

Kongsberg is in the business of producing electronic targets that meet the exacting standards of competition at Olympic level and for other international competition. We have requested a 900 metre target set up for Aussie TR and F-Open and as they have never done this before they require a lead time of several months to test the target to ensure that it is completely accurate under all conditions. They are sticklers for this sort of thing and are unlikely to relax these restrictions given that we will be at best a small part of their business.
You second suggestion about competition software is where we intend to go. It is available now but at the moment we have higher priorities. Right now the 300 metre range at Bisley (which is all electronic) is connected to this software and it calculates the ongoing scores of any competition and provides live feeds of the scores to various club huts on the range. We will have this in the future and Kongsberg is keen to provide it for us.
We need to crawl before we can walk.
