malcolm,
your 223 should be registered by the nraa for use in fopen only.
the only way you should be allowed to use it in std is with 40 gn roundnose pills so that others have a chance!

Amax 223 projectiles

Hi Mal
Tell me more about the Berger 80 grainers. In your opinion do you think that they a better than the Amax.
I can see in the future they could open up all projectiles and it will be open slather in the game. Then they could reduce target dimensions and we will all be back to where we all started.
My 2 cents worth Rich :)

advertised b.c. of 80 gn berger vld is 0.471. twist 1 in 8.
advertised b.c. of 155 gn berger vld is 0.472.
90 gn berger 22 cal vld is 0.517. twist 1 in 7.
in the usa now palma bullets only need to be under 156 gn, and berger have brought out a 155.5 gn pill.
there is no doubt that bergers are a superior bullet to sierras etc., but like a finely tuned violin, they require a bit more work to reap the rewards.
i can't see the new bjd as having a much different bc than the berger.
calculations i have made give it only about 1/3 to 1/2 minute advantage over the 155 sierra at 1000 yards in a 10 mph crosswind.
that translates to 1 or 2 clicks on a fullbore sight. at closer ranges the difference is less.

richard,
there's an interesting article on shooting a 223 at 1 mile on long range hunting.com.
of note is that the 75 and 80 gn amax were the 2 best bullets at that range. the 80 gn berger vld is mentioned also.

80 Grain AMax 223

Hi Again
I gave the 80 grain Amex a go today at 500 yards.
I seated them touching the lanse and run them at 25.00 of 2208
I shot 49.4 and 50.3 for a total of 99.7
I think I need to look at the seating depth as I was not impressed with the group.....but it could be me as I am not holding as good as I should.
Ok I am asking if anyone else has tried them and can point me in the right direction re seating depth.
I am running a Tru Flite 7 in 1 twist barrel with 6 grooves. I will appreciate any feedback.
Thanks Rich

I used the Amax for 1 round at 800yds today and confirmed what I've previously known. Sierra's in the first round wouldn't hold V bull elevation and I lost a couple just out at 6 and 12 o'clock but the Amax in the second round held under half V bull elevation and the only one lost was my fault just outside the V bull right on 3 o'clock. I can't seat either the sierra or Amax anywhere near the lands, they probably have 80 thou jump but even when new my rifle always grouped better with around 20 thou to the lands.
Regards Malcolm.

I am led to believe that talking to a SARA Top Turnip today at our club presentation dinner that the National Rifle association will hand down a descision today about what 223 projectiles will be used to make us 223 shooters equal and on a even plain with the new dyer projectiles.
They were meeting this weekend,Stay tuned

80 grain Amax Projectiles

Hi All
After a lot of winging and a few emails I have found out the following

That SARA Executive has approved the use of the Hornady 80 gn A Max. For general use as of the 1st of October 2008.

This obviously means that they can be used in our Queens series.

This came about form queries sent to the NRAA about projectiles,

The NRAA have just said they will approve the 80gn A Max as of the 1 / 1 / 2009.

SARA felt that this would be unfair to all 5.56 users and have brought the date forward in SA to the 1 / 10 / 2008 for general use.

Can you please pass the word around so that all 5.56 users are informed in time.
I must congratulate the Team at SARA who took the incentive to allow us to shoot these at the up coming Adelaide Queens.
I can not understand why the National Rifle association says that they can not be used until January the 1st 2009 ???

How can this be if we are goverened by the Standard Shooting Rules

My understanding is that the only parts of the SSRs that are "sacred" are the safety rules. For example rule 11.2.5.4 allows the State Associations to modify the rules "to suit local conditions".

Yes Alan, in WA (for example), the rules are as written in the SSR's, BUT with exceptions as applied by WARA for each year - such as grading, testing procedures, the usual stuff.

From what I have been told by WARA execs, the same thing with the dates has been applied - maily to suit the Queens event - and makes sense. The new projectiles (we were discussing the Dyer HBC at the time) would be available from the WARA shop after the Queens. I expect something similar regarding the A-max.

it advises that the use of A-MAX 80gr projectiles under SSR's has been brought forward to 1st October 2008. Letter explains detail. This should good news for all 5.56mm shooters.
