What sort of life can be expected from the 6.5 X 55 barrels?
Is it greater than the 6.5 X 284's?
On another note is the .223 competitive over 1,000?
Thank you for your help.

.223 over 1000
Cant advise much in regards to the 6.5 stuff but as far as accuracy of .223 over 1000 yards is right up there with them.
F standard get good groups over long range and I personally have seen a 5 shot sub 2" group (without a scope).
Otherwise some of us get used to a calibre and fail to look at other possibilities.
I shoot .223 only in TR but would love to experiment with .223AI with a 6.5 or 7 twist and 90 gn pills.

Re: WHAT CAL
I'm currently playing with the 6.5x47 with 140's, and while it takes a bit of work to keep up with the 7mm's I think it is a great all rounder. It is AS GOOD as a 6mm, in that centre counts are equivalent! A 60.10 is achievable, so I'd recommend going to 6.5 cal as it will get you to 1000 yards.
Saying that, in hindsight I probably would have gone 6.5x55 due to the cheaper brass and more boiler room giving you the ability to get to 2950 fps easily.
The 6.5-284 unfortunately runs a bit too hot so is a barrel burner as you know.
The 7mm's will get you out of trouble when the conditions get rough, so it would be a good idea to have one in the kit as we'll.
When it comes to calibre choice, I look at what range of projectiles are available in each, which leads me to staying with 7mm instead of venturing into the 30 cal arena.
The most import thing is to enjoy shooting what ever you end up with!
