I have heard mixed results regarding accuracy with the 300 Rum.
If you contacted Peter VanMuers he could fill you in on its performance, I thought about using it but looking at the loading data on the ADI web site scared me with regard to how much powder was used.

Norm, the 230gn Bergers at 2850fps is about as fast as you need to launch them to be competitive against the biggest 7mm pills and keep recoil to a comfortable level.

However I will make up a few loads for you to try at full throttle.

Surely a 300 win mag would have all the case capacity you would need, without burning out barrels too fast. Just get a really slow powder, 1 in 10 twist and try 230 bergers at 2800 from a 30" barrel. Quickload says just over 82gr of 2225 should do it, at least on a computer !!!!!!! 2840 virtual feet per second

Actually ADI 2218 gives you another 100fps, (ON A COMPUTER.) with 83g and less pressure

Thanks for all the info,maybe I'm being miserable but 83gns of powder to be competitive with 51gns in a 284 might be a bit much.Might just sit back and watch the 30 cal developments as they unfold. 7mm seems to be the go at present,I think we'll all be watching the world champs to see who wins with what.

The diff in powder costs is about 15 cents per shot. Depending on which projie you used it still could be cheaper. Also 284 brass isn't know for its long life when run flat out. All things to consider.

Have fun hanging onto your rifle when you manage to cram 83 gn of 2225 in it.
I use 2217 and found a load of 74gn with a 230 hybrid jumped 30 thou it cronied just under 2800

Paul, my computer did not recoil at all when I punched the numbers into quickload


But its fun hearing how these things go in the real world..... I am using a 6BR and have a 280AI on the way

Took 12 rounds to test zero in my new stock, fired 2 into the mound while I waited till I could set up my target at 100 metres, then shot the 2 x 5 shot groups. New brass and rifle has only shot 60 rounds.

It looks promising doesn't it!

Berger 230gr hybrids launched at 2850fps with my new 300WM. Seems to work pretty well at this stage in its development.

Getting back to your original question, biggest 30 cal regardless of barrel life or recoil.

You can use anything you like up to 8mm in FO so I had my 338 Lap Remington rebarreled in 300 Lap just for laughs.

Mild load of 2213 will launch 155gr bjd @ 3600fps, not very accurately I might add.

Matts got my reamer if you want a lesson in short barrel life.

I have a reamer for a 30-338LM Imp. 210gr Berger at 3300fps plus with 30" barrel from what I've read. I haven't built one yet. Got it for extreme long range shooting which I don't get to do much. That's probably only 1000rds of barrel life but wind drift? What wind drift? And drop? 22-250AI got nothing on this!!

I wouldn't use it for FO but. 100 plus gr if powder would make me a poor man even quicker then my 6mm!!

This is a very interesting topic and I personally feel the next few years will see more and more 30 cals in the high end of the sport.

I thank Paul for his pioneering work and input. Very valued experience indeed.

Nice looking rifle Ian (and groups - I think - bit hard to zoom in though).

Certainly Berger have thrown the challenge out there with these 215 and 230's!! My personal opinion is similar to others here, Somewhere around the WSM and WM case capacity should see the gold. Biggest isn't necessarily best.

Was there a particular reason you chose a 300WM instead of the WSM ?

Ian chose the Win Mag so he could run the 230 Berger Hybrid projectiles a lot easier than a WSM can.
Ian has certainly come up with some very accurate loads.
