Agreed! It's probably the best site out there for in depth discussion with accurate information from experience shooters with the least amount of idiots.


One thing I've noticed is that the topic heading stays highlighted until you view all the new posts inside. Previously once you opened "events" for instance, the tab would no longer be highlighted.

Yes. I see this behavior.

At first it was only a curiosity but is now becoming an issue for me.

It is valuable, and saves a lot of time, if one sees information highlighting any new posts.
But - unless one goes into every topic and sub topic no reset occurs.

SO - I can no longer ignore a myriad of uninteresting or irrelevant posts any more.

Does anyone else see this as a problem.

Yes others have commented on this change also.

Before we look into the possibility of finding a "mod" to change it back, can I ask you to explore several features which may alleviate the problem. The "View new posts" facility is what I use. I have the following URL in a shortcut on the Windows taskbar :
This retains the old behaviour i.e. when you logout and back in, it forgets the previous new posts regardless of whether read or not.
Alternatively, there are quick ways of marking multiple items as read (ie not unread). In the "Board index" page you have a "Mark forums read" button (above RHS column), and on each forum page you have a "Mark topics read" button in the same position.

See how you go with those.

But I don't log out & in. I stay logged in, as optionally offered & the old system forgot previous posts, which was a bugger occasionally.

On the other hand, your proposition works.

Then again, if you log out each visit, it ditches earlier mail anyway.

Logging in and out can be made no more complicated than closing the window, then going back in with a single click on a "new posts" shortcut as described in my previous post. Note also that you need to tick the "log me in automatically" once and it'll work from then on.

This solves the problem although it changes the way I use the forum.

I still think the original behavior was better but if it is hard to change then I can certainly live with this.

It is normally my habit never to leave passwords automatically set but in this case I have relented.

Well, I've got that link on a hot key, I just read all the new mail, Xed our & hotkeyed in & the fuggers are still there in the new posts.

Getting more confused here.

What's the difference between a new post & an unread post?

Last night, I read all messages that displayed accessing the forum via the URL you suggested (search.php?search_id=newposts), Alan. When I opened the forum this morning, there were 5 new messages/threads, all with the orange unread flag, of which I read all but one, for the purpose of experimentation. Next & subsequent times I came back today, that same list displayed, albeit with the one unread still showing the orange unread flag. Seems whether or not you read the buggers, they are still new posts.

This time, after when I jumped on, I clicked the view unread posts button, which displayed that message I had deliberately not read, together with one I was disinterested in some days back & likewise didn't read. So, one of the two was new (since when?) & one was old(er) but unread.

Maybe I should access the site via search.php?search_id=unreadposts

Now I'm a bit confused too.

If I had more time, I'd do a search of the posts on the phpBB help forum at https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewforum.php?from=submenu&f=46. Its available to anyone to join so if this particular change is irking you, can I suggest you ask the question on the support forum? We have changed from phpBB version 2.0.13 to version 3.0.12.
