I've had some information from BobPed. He was told by one of the security people at the Melbourne end of the Spirit of Tas very recently that he was prepared to give us some leeway. They were mainly interested in people TOTALLY abusing the system.

He also said

I find that quite unacceptable. You can't expect to rely on people choosing not to enforce their own regulations. You're either allowed to carry the extra weight of ammunition or you aren't.
