alan,
bring the whole quiver if you must.
one goal of the sara queens is to take home one more barrel than you brought, to wit the krieger you could win in open or std.
of course, if shooting ftr you could take home a savage rifle.
keep safe,
bruce.

That'll be a piece of cake for me Bruce - I'm expecting to pick up a Krieger I ordered from the shop  .

50gn RE17 = 2827fps.

51gn RE17 = 2857fps.

52gn RE17 = 2921fps.

Norm,

I bought a bottle of RE17, and found it did the same as the other powders - anything over about 2900 caused excessive primer pocket expansion. I've tried 2209, 2213SC, 2217, RE17, RE22 and N165 (which has become my go to powder). My impression is that a slow powder and a long barrel is the best way of increasing velocity without expanding the case head.

Have you done enough of the 52gn RE17 loads to know whether the cases will take it?

Adam,

Yes - there is a FCWC trial the day before the leadup, and I'll be staying on the range through to the end of the Queens, shooting F-Open. There might be a few others from WA and Vic there too. I trust you will be turning on some good robust conditions? The trial will be at 900m, so it'll be my first taste of that distance at Lower Light.

Well here's my 284 experience, on friday first day of the Queens had a horror at the last range with my 6.5 (pilot error not the gun), so went home and chambered my new 7mm barrel to 284, turned some brass and loaded enough rounds for the first 2 stages (got to bed @ 1.30am), using 50.9 of 2209 with 180 VLD's 10 thou into the rifling. Shot the first stage (and the first rounds thru this barrel) for a 60.6 !!!! anyway continued with that load for the rest of the Queens, elevation was excellent and topped it off with a 90.6 @ 800m. Will do some fine tuning and see if I can get it better.

Sounds like a Tru-Flite Matt :D . And that's quite a light load, probably under 2800fps. It reinforces the fact that accuracy is the key, and the BC of those 180s means high velocity is not necessary. So in average conditions at ANZAC, what range will you put the 6.5 away and bring out the 7?

Alan, I only started testing today with this powder.
After the test I loaded up a heap at 51.5gn and will run them over the next few weeks to see how the primer pockets hold up.
The other option is to bump up my charge of AR2213sc a tad to get into the zone where I want to run and see how that goes.

Matt, you said it was pilot error not the rifle, therefore why the need for the big change and a late night? :?:

I shot the RE17 loads today. Got better results than with AR2213sc but the case has a fair bit of powder capacity not being utilized with the 51.5gn load and 180gn Berger Hybrid.

AR2217?? Seems like this would fill a case quite nicely :D Anyone like to share a load with this powder? Please.

Today I reloaded the cases that I used on the weekend with the 51.5gn load of RE17 and 180gn Berger Hybrid.
When seating the new primers it was obvious that the primer pockets had opened up quite a bit. The cases were almost stuffed. So Re17 looks to be a bit hard on primer pockets.

Moving onto AR2217 I did a bit of velocity/pressure testing. Here is the results with the same projectile.
55gn AR2217, 180gn Berger Hybrid = 2695fps
56gn AR2217, 180gn Berger Hybrid = 2797fps
57gn AR2217, 180gn Berger Hybrid = 2807fps
58gn AR2217, 180gn Berger Hybrid = 2850fps. pressure/extraction ok.
59gn AR2217, 180gn Berger Hybrid = 2909fps, slight bolt pressure on extraction.

Opinions/thoughts on these results so far?
