Rifle weighing scales.

Any better suggestions than bathroom scales for checking rifle weight after swapping barrels etc?
Kitchen scales are too light I doubt the accuracy of the bathroom scales. Something someone picked up online perhaps?

Get some good quality digital kitchen scales. Some only go to 5kg but that just means you have to remove the scope and the stock and add it all up. You should not have a problem though finding 10kg ones if you dont mind spending a bit more than Kmart ones. Accuracy wise they will be within a gram or two which is good enough. I do my rifle this way and going to a shoot and weighed on the official scales it is always very close to what I expected. If you want to go to the next level try going to an auction like Quaids (think that is how it is spelt) and buy a used digital shop food scale.

I use commercial shop scales. You can pick these up at auctions from closing down fruit & veg/butchers/supermarkets/delis. If you buy one of these and invest in a check weight you'll have it for life and never need worry again.

I have a 10kg digital fishing scale from BCF that I hung from a roof beam roof of the shed with a steel wire rope. I loop an old sports bag shoulder strap on the hook then just tare out the strap and place the rifle in the loop. I find this a lot easier than trying to balance heavy barrelled rifles on kitchen scales etc. It also makes it easy to find the balance point of the rifle. 10kg is fine for my FTR rifles but I'd think a 15-20kg scale would be preferable for FO rifles.

Hi Steve, I use refrigeration digital scales only about $110 on flea-bay. easy to cross check with known weights. Mine seems to be similar accuracy as the NRAA scales.

I have a 10 kg electronic kitchen scale,you may need to weigh the bipod separately,take some time and care weighing as the shown weight can vary if the rifle being weighed is not on the balance point.Please leave yourself some leeway as the persons manning the official scales may not be as generous as you would like them to be.If you have a new outfit,check the weight yourself,don’t rely on the builder to get it right,I had to remove a sunshade and swap a couple of screws once to be allowed to shoot.

I've had to remove scope lens dust covers to make weight so I know what you mean.

Baby weigh scales are another option, 0-20 kg, an ok resolution of 5 grams for a little over $100 and easy to put the rifle on.

The local vet clinic works well too but please give us some warning before helping yourselves to the dog weigh scales

I use the scales at my local butchers. Check first but the advantage is that they are around at 6:00am when nobody else is about. Of course you need to develop a relationship with them but you get to eat much better quality meat that way than by buying at the supermarkets.

As CRO of Victoria, perhaps you could persuade the VRA to invest in some certified weights. This would allow shooters to bring their own scales (or personal weights) to Bendigo to check them.

I would want to hope all of the state associations have certified scales and appropriate check weights. Should really be mandatory especially at queens and national events.
