Leupold are a great scope IF you get a good one, I had one that went back for repair so many time it had frequent flyer points and I sold it and bought a weaver which is the most reliable scope I have ever owned BUT the optics let it down. If you could cross the weaver mechanicals with the leupold optics you'd have a great scope. If I was on a budget I'd probably buy a T24 Weaver or a 25 Power Leupold (just been released in the US) and hope I got a good one. If money wasn't a problem I'd buy a 12-42 BR Nightforce.

I agree with Matt.
It's not a question of IF a Leupold is going to die, its WHEN.
I had 5 Leupolds. All had adjustment reliability problems and the 1 had a parralax problem. All were fixed no charge (except for postage there). I even sent one back three times. No more for me.
Spend your money on a Nightforce Br model. They dont cost that much more than a Leupold. Especially if you consider frequent flyer postage costs.

I would advise getting a variable power scope, particularly if its your first or only target scope. Some shooters can shoot happily in heavy mirage at high magnification, but most prefer to wind down to under 20X. Regarding Leupolds and unreliability, it seems to be mostly the 8-25x50 model that has problems. If you can afford $1500 to $1600 then the 8-32x56BR Nightforce is probably the safest bet.

I have 4 Leupolds 6.5/20 x40 EFR model, never had a problem with any of them. Sold 2 of them to upgrade to NF but still use the other 2 ( on 308's ) These are 1" tube and limited to about 50moa so you need to get taper right on rail, but having done that there is ample elevation to get to 1000yards. Excellent optics and positive, repeatable movements. Current retail price about $1000 depending where you buy. Best value from Horsley Park gun shop.

i notice that no one has mentioned lynx , so any opinions on lynx, saw the lynx ad in the target rifle, so was looking up there website last nite

I own a Leupold 6.5-20x50 ($1,275.00) and love it. No problems so far, except I wish I had gone for the 8.5-25x50 instead, as that extra 5 power would come in handy when shooting at longer ranges than 800m.
A guy I shoot with recently bought a second hand rifle (one of the Tobler's old 1000m fly rifles) with a 42 power NF scope on it and he likes the 6.5-20x50 Leupold that is on his Rem 700P better.
So much, that he intends on swapping them over???

I agree about going for the variable, unless you love mirage.

My experience is that shorter ranges benefit most from higher magnifications. But if you knob twiddle rather than aim off you can get by with much lower magnifications.

Personally I would never go below 20x and prefer 25x in all situations.

Variable. When there is a truely reliable variable available for a moderate price I might suggest it. But, after shooting with fixed magnification for a while, actually prefer it.

i had up until this arvo thought the weaver was top of the wozza

wifey every know & again, lets me use her rifle 2 check how things are going

well, after much soul searching & looking at bank account

i have ordered a Lynx P6-24 scope thru pro-cal trading
as u may have noticed, i have gone for a variable based on what some of u have suggested

& yes a i did price Nightforce, but noticed that they didnt come with automatic wind reading & auto bad score rectifier

so decided too pay a bit less and handle that dept myself

When someone makes a scope that can do that, I'll buy it, even if I have to mortgage the house and maybe even the kids.

Hmm...no I wouldn't, that would take all the fun out of the sport.
