Hi All
My FTR project is getting serious, Matt has my action and there’s a 32” HP bartlein 10 twist being delivered
Is there a preferred barrel length?
I’m thinking 30”- mostly to fit in my case
What’s your preference?
Tim

30 inch is what I get mine finished to, some are 30.5.

Tim, you can always cut some off , but you cant stick it back on ..... start as long as possible IMHO
I know from playing with my varmint 308 what a difference it makes to velocities..... and hence wind bucking

If you have the weight I'd suggest you go as long as possible. As said above, sticking a bit back on is not an option. At 30" a rechamber may questionable too.
I'd say projectile choice also needs consideration. There are no hard and fast facts but I believe the tendency is for longer skinnier barrels to be less favourable for heavy (200> ). Some do shoot them very well so certainly worth trying, but if they don't you can either go lighter pill or shorter barrel.
I have a Shillen HP @ 32 that loves 185s, My Maddco #7s are all 30-31" and shoot 200-215s my parallel is down to 28 simply due to weight.
