My son has shown some interest in F Class, as yet I am unsure how long this interest will last!
So I am looking at the cheaper end of the .223 market.

What are you recommendations?

Secondhand prices are so close to new for quality kit that I would be spending the money and getting him setup with a competitive rifle. If you can find a 2nd hand Barnard or similar you almost have nothing to lose, you may even gain yourself a 2nd rifle

Oh and if it's something you would want to shoot it's almost certainly going to help keep everyone motivated!

On Sunday I witnessed a standard 223 savage FTR rifle blitz the opposition in hard conditions with 308s/200gn struggling, this bloke started the day with 60.5 at 500

It was a borrowed 223 F class savage that got Sophie shooting, hitting a 60 something at 600 when its owner hadn't even taken it back that far! Unfortunately they lose a $1000 as soon as they are taken out of the box. The owner couldn't sell that particular gun for $2500 despite being immaculate and consistently shooting 60 something scores!
