Australia Day -- Saturday 26th Jan 2008
Castlemaine Rifle Club is again conducting a shoot for Australia Day Medals, at the Castlemaine Range.
Programme is 3 x 10 shots at 500 yards.
Reason for staying at 500 is more for convenience as if it is hot we intend to erect portable Gazebos to make conditions more comfortable.

There will be medallions for TR in A, B and C grades.
F Class standard in A and B grades and
F Class open.
In addition we are including Field F Class for appropriate Rifles ( see SSR's ) So all of you people out there who qualify for Field class, come to Castlemaine and get an introduction to F Class shooting.

Entry fee is $10 which includes an evening meal.
There will be Competitor marking. If you cannot mark you will not be expected to, so don't let that keep you away.

Starting time is 12 noon.
See Flyer in Events section.

Hey, Stuart, Patrick and anyone else with field rifles.
This is your chance to get initiated into F Class. Another first for Castlemaine---Field F Class. You want to shoot, come on the 26th Jan, bring your field rifles with you and join the fun.
No more excuses ---JUST DO IT.

Field Rifle.
If its under 5.5 Kg excluding weight of rest.
If its 8mm or less
Any trigger weight including a set trigger.
It goes Bang not BOOM, No muzzle breaks please.
Can have a magazine but one round loading required
Any sights, Iron, Scope or Laser.
Dont let that expensive hunting rifle ( or not so expensive) be it for small game or feral Pigs go rusty in the gun safe
Then get off your  and shoot it
If you dont have a front rest then a bag of rice inside a couple of clean socks works well. Even saw a lady using a bag of chook pellets that worked as a front rest last saturday.

Well it's been and gone. and another successful one at that.
Weather was hot ( 35c ) with that terrible frontal fishtail that Castlemaine is renowned for at this time of the year.
All catagories were well represented including two Field class shooters.
F Class again dominated the entries with almost 60% of the entry.
Strange as it may seem and contrary to a recent a statement there appeared to be harmony between the FO and FS shooters. Maybe it's only certain people that disrupt this harmony ( thankfully they were not there )
Results,
FB
A grade---Greg Tomorad ( Bendigo) 144-9
B grade---Richard Ruddick( C/maine) 140-11
C grade---Keith Toh ( Werribee ) 136-4
FSA---Jenny Davies ( C/maine ) 171 ( 59 56 56 )
FSB---Clint Mahon ( Sth Bendigo ) 165 (56 53 56 )
FO---Geoff Wells ( Werribee ) 272 ( 92 90 90 )
Field Class---Mick Ohman 9 SSAA Bendigo ) 147 ( 48 48 51 )
We have the Medallions already for next year so it is on again. If you couldn't make it this year, pencil it on your calender for next year.

G'Day all,
I'd like to thank the CRC for a great day and great hospitality.

To all those who didn't make it definately make the effort for next year, well worth the effort to meet & greet :D

BTW bring plenty of water to drink as it can get HOT & THIRSTY!

I would like to say a huge thank you to the CRC for a great day in competition and guidance, and yes guys i have filled out the paperwork for that new "acquisition" to my collection and will be back on the mounds as soon as possible :) . Considering there can be some animosity on the forum between the different classes i did not see any whilst at Castlemaine :D , I received nothing except help, motivation and a big learning curve from everyone there as to the different setups and requirements for each class. Once again thank you for running such a professional day, To all that missed it make sure to keep Australia day free next year.

Well done Castlemaine. How was the Field Class? Were entry numbers good? Would it be worth trying elsewhere? Any lessons learnt that will give rise to changes in format etc?

Alan.

Only had the two Field class shooters but I think we have gained two new members. They both had a ball, despite the heat. When I left after the B-B-Q they were both still there obviously enjoying themselves.
Definitely worth trying elsewhere as there are literally hundreds of them out there. No need to go to great expense to put it on, simply charge a modest entry with a trophy of sorts to make the exercise worthwhile. I dont know that Field Class will ever become a stand alone discipline but it's that close to FS ( separated only by rifle weight= 5.5 kg and calibre -any up to 8mm ) I have always said that F/C should be attached to FO as a separate class because of rifle weight and unrestricted projectile and still maintain it would only be a step away from FO. But then it is only a step away from FS also.
Some field rifles that are being built at present are definitely closer to F Class that Field class.
I will be recommending to Castlemaine that at our next PM ( in November ) we advertise a Field Class with a moderate entry fee and a reasonable trophy at the end of the day, meantime we will of course endeavour to drum up some competitors.
If it fails then so what, as the loss can be absorbed within the days overheads.
This " chicken and egg " approach will achieve nothing. Put it on, be prepared to lose a trophy ( not really as it can be used another time) and who knows what you may get out of it.

G,day Barry,
Sorry I couldn't there this year, I had to do some O/T. FORD are about to launch their new model in March and we are ramping up for them.
Could you give us a breakdown on the FO for the day??

Thanks,

Wayne

Wayne,

Top 3 are on the OPM results page, others were Tom Holinger (89, 88, 85 - 262), Adam Davies (87, 88, 85 - 260).

Your 7mm would have been overkill - it doesn't get going till about 800. Don't forget Geelong!
