284 load for Lapua 284 brass, Berger 180vld

Post by GlennA »

Hi guys, I’m new to fopen. Getting a new 284 built with Barnard action, 32” 8.5twist Bartlein using the new Lapua 284 brass and Berger 180 vld’s. Suggestions for powder type, amount of powder, seating depths much appreciated.

Most popular powder choice for this combo is 2209. No reports locally on how the new Lapua brass stacks up, but I'd be looking to start around 49.5gr and work up slowly. Seating depth? VLDs generally like to be jammed, but they will also work jumped - start in the lands to begin with.

What primers would you use with the 2209 powder?

The 2 Primers most popular would be,
Federal 210 GOLD MATCH
CCI BR2
Highly recommend using a chrono while working up your load in 284.
Keep speed below 2820fps with 180VLD

Using 6.5 x 284 Lapua brass necked up
CCI BR2 Primers
32 inch Benchmark barrel 8.5 twist
180 grain Berger Hybrids
10 thou jump
52.5 grains of 2213SC. a slower burn and less aggressive on the barrel. If you are using 2209 then 50 grains +/- a bit.
Expect about 2300 rounds down the barrel, on the average, for barrel life.
The best I shot with this was 60.10 at 500m at the Vic Queens. It also shoots well at 1200 yards.
Remember, start low with powder load and work up, as every barrel has its own personality.
Good Luck
Cheers

What Brett said, he's one of the best F-Open shooters in the country and knows the 284 well.
