If I meet my gun smith at a competition and he hands over a chambered barrel can I self register it or does it have to be transferred through a dealer?

this is unbelievable, you take a shotgun into the cop shop and the clowns don't know whether its a automatic or a repeater they have no idea how to strip it down, now this, when will it stop!

It has been this way in NSW for years. If the gunsmith is a Lic Dealer (he should be) he can do the paperwork, individual barrel registration is only required for multiple barrels of various calibers per action. If it is a replacement barrel of the same caliber the registration details of the rifle doesn’t change. If it is a replacement barrel of a different caliber a caliber change/barrel registration form must be lodged by the licensed gunsmith/dealer.

Try living in WA, a barrel of anouther caliber is viewed as another firearm eg get a 223 barrel for your 222 ,new gun.Just the application fee is now over 250 dollars with no guarantee of approval and up to 8 weeks wait

My f class gun is registered as a 6.5*45 but it is on its 3 rd 308 barrel does that mean that a new 308 barrel has o be registered.?

If you still use your 6.5 barrel the 308 barrel should be registered as a additional barrel for that action. If the 6.5 barrel is no longer used, FAR should be notified of a caliber change. This is done by your licensed gunsmith by way of a proper dealer FAR lodged form.

What if i have eg a firearm registered its a 223 and i have another barrel chambered in 223 for it maybe different twist or whatever. Does the second barrel need to be registered?

To the letter of the law yes. But I don’t think FAR gets too excited about that, barrels of different calibers is a different matter! They are no longer too fussed about take off barrels either, but that’s fluid so they can change their minds at any time as they see fit!
