G'day all. I've just been wondering. How close is the Omark (Sportco) 44 action to the Remington 700 Long Action and/or Short action. The reason I ask is that if i want to fit a scoope base onto a Omark, what sort of base should I get. Would a 700 SA or LA base fit or am I completey wrong? Would I need to gte a basee modified to fit the Omark?

None of the Remmy sight bases fit. The Omark is cylindrical front to back while the Remington has the area behind the loading port ground to a larger diameter curve somewhat below the height of the front of the action.

The best solution is to fit (have fitted) a rail with a suitable radius & desirably a 20 or so MOA taper if you plan to shoot F class with it. I'm sure you'll find one of our commercially-oriented members will offer you direction to locate a suitable product.

Incidentally, if you read some of the USA shooting web sites, one of the bugbears of the Remington action is the imprecision of the grinding of that radius & the likelihood that the holes tapped for sight bases will be out of line. Aren't you lucky your working with an Omark - in this regard anyway?

I am not sure at all that all the bad who is said about the Remington 700 action is objective..This comes probably more from those making money enterprising such ''bluerintings'', 'trueings" and the like.
If you study from a technical approach the procedures offered, some reveals more negative than positive

Certainly, the Remngton action is not perfect (which one is??), and it is not my intention to start a discussion on this but, if there is imperfections, it is surely not those too often stated.

Modern machining techniques are such that some defects indicated were only possible if Remington was still working with WW1 war effort methods and machines..
I don't think it is the case !!!..

As you point, a round or symtric action all the way long is the choice for a lot of reasons..

I think you could use savage bases.

Has anyone tryed using Savage bases on the Omarks??

Rails made by Ken Farrell for the Savage work very well on the Omark. The one you need has part no SAV-RTS-1-20. It is for a Savage round top short action,one piece,20 minute. The same rail sold through Sinclairs (and for some reason cheaper than direct from Farrell's) carries the part no. 06-240. These steel rails fit very well to the Omark with a couple minor mods. One extra hole to be drilled at the rear and they need to be relieved above the recoil plate if it sits higher than the action. They fit equally well to left or right hand Omarks and are contoured to allow unhindered access to the loading port on either action. Also local manufacturers Davies Triggers or Geoff Grenfell can supply tapered rails to suit the Omark but only in aluminium I think.

B-Square make a scope base for the Omark although it doesn't have the 20moa elevation in built. The distributer in Aus' is Lynx Optics. I've got one for my Omark from Doug Barnes at Western Gunsmiths in Perth and may still have them in stock?

I really want a 20 - 30MOA base. Most likely 20MOA.

I have an Omark F Class that I am retiring and it has a 20 MOA base made just for it by Ken Hills
Hasn't had much use as I traded up 2 months after finally fitting it ( owned it for 2 years before I fitted it.

You will need to drill and tep the action to suit the base.
