Anyone trying a 6 in this size? Tought I,d give it a go as I have 6mm stuff. Interested in loads with 2209. Anyone got any thoughts on Copperhead projectiles? Made in Aussie, could be world beaters.

G'Day Chris,
i'm using a 6x47lapua, with 39.5gns 2209, CCI450 primers and moly'd Sierra 107MK. Estimated MV based on come ups is around 3100fps and i'd suggest using 2213sc or some of the Reloader series of powders between 2209 & 2213sc. But definately use magnum primers.
Hopefully some copperheads will find their way to my reloading bench soon, as jackets are on order and none in stock (Spoke to Ken today)
My rifle is a Hall S BR rifle and it shoots ok, came 1st and 2nd in the vic police games (FO), loaned it to a young bloke in our Brigade and he beat me with it, even shot a 100 at 300yds! It also came 2nd in the recent Victorian 500m Fly competition at Little River.
So the cartridge is a good one especially in the hands of a good wind reader...........that's not me!
Cheerio Ned

Thanks Ned and others. I,ve been running a 6mmBR and a .243AI so have a reasonable collection of projectiles, however, at the NSW long range champs. at the start of May Barry and Ken had experimental 103gn. Copperheads, they finished 1st. and 2nd. (6-6.5x47) not sure if they are on sale yet, but when they are they are a must have.
I,m interested what others are loading in 6x47.

My box of 103s have just arrived and I have been doing some measuring, only checking about 20-25 bullets each of copper heads, 107 sierras and 105 Bergers. First I made up a crude bearing length checker, using a .22 insert for the boat tail and a 6mm one for the ogive. With the bearing length checker zeroed for the copper heads, here is what I found
Diameter is .2431"
I dont have any accurate scales or Juenke machine so I cant go right into nitt picking details. The box says 13 secant ogive.
Copper head, no difference in bearing length , length set to zero
Sierra .002" difference in bearing lengths and average .025" longer
105 Berger .001" difference in lengths ,average .0015 shorter.
My digital vernier measures down to .0005"
Total length
Copper head 1.218 to 1.223 .005 variance
Sierra 107 1.220 to 1.228 .008" = = =
Berger 105 1.230 to 1.236 .006" ===
Boat tail length
Copper head approx .225"
Sierra and Berger approx .180"
Meplat
Copperhead .049"
Sierra .054"
Berger .049"
Base to ogive length
copper head set to 0
sierra .008" longer
Berger .022 shorter
Going by marks left from the goive checker, the ogive on the sierra is a poofteenth shorter, maybe .010" while the Berger is about .020 longer.
Overall, the ogive looks similar to the sierra, with the difference being the copper head having a longer boat tail than both sierra and Berger.
Going by these measurements, the copper heads are slightly more uniform, which is probably to be expected being a low volume custom made bullet.
About the only check left is the important one, how they go on paper. I wont be doing any shooting for a few weeks, so I wont be able to tell you how they shoot. Going by how they shot at Ungarie, I would say this Isnt going to be a problem. I will be using these in my 6x47, using Garry Liddle 100gn flat bases at 300 yds and the copper heads frm 500 to 1200 yds.
The best thing about these bullets is that they are made in OZ by a fellow competition shooter.

Rod, you can send a box or two up here and we will test them.

Cameron,I only have 1 box myself, but Ken malgaard must have them available now. If you cant get any off him, let me know and I will send 1/2 a box up to you. It will be interesting to see how they compare on your Yuenke machine compared to others.
Look on copperheadbullets.com for contact details for Ken.
PS, Chris, I used 2209 in my 6x47 and worked up to 38.5gns with 98gn FB bullets. This load got me a 98 at 800, but I will load 38.75 when I use the 103 gn pills. From info from other shooter, it seems the most popular loads for 103-107gn bullets in the 6x47 go from 38.6 - 39gns of H4350 or AR2209 with a 30" barrel. Mine did not shoot well at all until I got close to 38.25 gns and realy came together at 38.5 which was not hot as far as pressures.

Thanks Rod, I appreciate that, I will try and buy a box or two. Would be interesting to see how they compare with the other "off the shelf" brands.

G'day Rod,
Good to see the bullets I sent out arrived okay, like others will be interested to see how they shoot in your rifle. I am waiting for a new stock to be finished by Mastin before I can start shooting my 6-6x47 Lapua.
And thanks for your input in checking out the diemensions compared to other bullets (Sierras & Bergers)
Regards & good shooting

G'Day Chris
I am a bit slow off the mark but here is my contribution re the 6x47L.
When the 308 barrel in my Fullbore rifle was shot out I was looking for something different to shoot.
Keith Hills replaced the 308 with 6X47L in late 2007.
Never been happier since.
A Sako M591 single shot target action,
30" Border/Archer stainless steel barrel with 1in8 twist in 6x47Lapua,
Davies trigger,
Walnut prone target stock (my old FB stock),
Nightforce NR8-32x56 scope with NP-R2 reticle.
Loading info -
Use Forster 6x47Lapua FL Ultra die set with micrometer seater plus a neck sizing die. (had to bring in from the USA in 2007)
Projectile 107gn HPBT Sierra Matchking
Powder 39.6gns 2209
Primer Rem71/2 Br
Cases 6.5x47mm Lapua (necked down to 6mm)
Chrony speed = 3084 ft/s
The above rifle and loads give me very accurate results and great fun.
My current challenges are to decide on what sort of front rest to use?
Somewhere in between at Harris bipod through to a Seb Rest.
Got to have a challenge.
Hope this info is of help to you.
Regards
Steve T
