yes more silly questions from the Irish in Adeilade.

Having decided on a cal(when ever) where would a guy get a rifle built.

I am talking to the guys at Night force in Adeilade who claim they can build what ever I want,Through Ace precision systems(???)

Has anyone delt with Night force,can you make an other recomandition.

A verry basic question I know ,but if I get this wrong it could be a verry
exey learning curve.

This is an area where you can get led astray easily. When you get a quote, make sure it includes a solid delivery time, and a solid price. Dont accept any BS that things might change in pricing etc...this is a ploy to get more of your money.

When you get some quotes from rifle builders, PM me for a reality check on pricing in Australia.

Are they target shooters(not that I am aware of)
Be wary
I don’t know of too many rifles built by them that are winning anything they may be able to build a tactical rifle but that’s it and there is a big difference between that and a rifle that will win long range matches.

One question to you , what do you want to build the rifle for?
Do you want a light weight hunting rifle ,a heavier varmint rifle? Do you want to shoot target, benchrest, fly ,f class.

Without talking to you we do not know which direction to send you.
There are some good gun smiths around, I personally have learnt the very hard and expensive way. I now ask a local smith who was right under my nose to chamber, crown and fit my barrels. He will also inlet stocks etc.

Because I shoot F Class Open, I purchase my own chamber reamers and supply the one I want the barrel to be fitted to the smith. It may cost a couple hundred dollars for the reamer but its yours to keep and you can set your seating depth up similar for each new chambering.

The stock, well you have seen my stock last year, it is not a hunting type stock. It is intended for front rest and rear sand bag. If you wanted a hunting stock, say timber, Geoff SLEE in Victoria can supply practically any blank coppy roughed out in Walnut for around $250.00, then you need it inleted and finished.
There is McMillan , in the U.S. that can ship to you just about any stock configuration , once you give them your action and barrel dimentions etc they make it up in synthetic/composite material, what ever colour you want and you just bolt your barreled action straight in and go shoot.

Actions, do you want a repeater or single shot? SARA (82445533) can supply BARNARD actions, either single shot or Remington footprint repeater actions and they also can order KRIEGER barrels in any taper you wish all at a good price.

Trigger's ,I have been introduced to an x benchrest shooter who is still active in shooting and fine tuning triggers and components. I took my Barnard to him , for a trigger tune, It was an inconsistent 6-7 ounces, when he finished with it, it is now a consistent, safe, 4 ounces.

Yep, I'm sold on Barnards but I still shoot my Tikka Tactical 223 in F Class Standard, only in team shoots. My open f class rifle is a Barnard 300 WSM, Krieger 1.25" cylinder profile barrel in a timber tracker style stock with a Weaver T36 , 1/8" dot scope . I use 210gn Berger VLD projectiles.
I hope you make it to S.A. Queens this year.

THANKS FOR THE REPLY,You have hit the nail on the head so to speak.
I went up to the shop at wingfield on Sat and spent several hours there.
The gentleman on duty was more than helpfull and set me straight on more than one question or 40,while I was there Mr Brendan Atkinson
came in(Australian shooter mag writer) and was kind enough to get involved in the conversation.
The upshot of all this, first get the lisance, then buy a standard 223 heavy barell(rem 700/savage/or other),then go every week to my home range (parra)and try to melt the barell,and have some fun.
Then in one or two years go about getting a custom 1000mtr rig when I actually know something.

This is giong to be so much fun.
