Hi guys,

I have just purchased a Wild Dog stock for my omark to replace the very heave timber it came with. (stamped LEGG if anyone knows what they are). A mate too the gun to a guy in or around Eltham a few years aog for some trigger work and a shorten and recrown and it came back with a screw in the middle in the action and the rear screw missing. The gun has always shot really well (.3 moa at 200m) so i dont know if it made any difference.

The question is do i drill a hole in my new stock for the middle screw or just bed it with a front and rear screws?

Hi Seddo , nice stock. I had seen wild dog as well and have thought of doing the same thing. Nice picture. Which wild dog stock is this one that you have?

A couple of years ago I had a new barrel and adapter put in,and a devcon bedding and had the same situation with screws. The rear screw goes through the trigger guard and then I have the centre under the chamber and the front into the bottom of the adapter, these two I tighten to get proper bearing on the bedding, the rear one just tight so that it does not go anywhere. I would suggest the centre and front ones, but that is just my opinion.

I think that when my rifle was rebedded, the bedding only extended under the action but not all the way back to the trigger guard screw, and when you would tighten up the screws, given that, the front is onto to devcon but the rear was only on to timber so that there would be a difference in compression of the materials, as compared to the original rifle tightening down onto a heavy washer set into the timber, that would explain the new centre hole.

Some target shooters use a 1/4 inch torque wrench to get the same tightening on the screws, with both bearing into the same base material of the stock or a block of some sort.

Do you have access to all of the holes? and is there suitable bearing.
Is the stock bearing at the front the same as the one in the middle and then the same as the one at the rear?

Just a couple of ideas.

We play with Omarks a bit....

Most I have seen have the front and tang screws only, some having the extra center screw. From my point of view, I like the extra center screw.

I am not a fan of the screw in the bottom of the recoil lug, preferring them to be behind this point. Have a look at a Musgrave, they are set up like your modified Omark. The tang screw can be left out, and given a choice, I would bed it with the trigger/tang swinging in the breeze.

Yes the rear of the tang was swinging in the breeze in the timber stock after the middle screw was fitted. Originally it was bedded all the way back to the rear screw.

I do have a inch popund torque wrench so i can do it without a problem. I needed it when i got my HS stock.

I had seen a Varmint stock on a remington and liked it so i ordered 2 of them, 1 for the omark and 1 for the remmy. If you are looking at gettign one you had better hurry up, i have heard that they are looking at stopping production of them due to the variations in barrel adapters for them. I am a big fan of their stocks, i now have 3 and couldnt be happier. My only bad thing i can say about them is they dont inlet for winchester actions so i had to order a manners for my 260 project.

Can anyone reccomend a gunsmith to do the bedding job? I do have bedding compound as i am going to do my 17hmr. Just dont want to stuff this one up.

Seddo, what 260 project would that be? To save the thread just PM me, as I am doing one now also.

I spoke to them this morning to order one, but before I do that they have asked me to measure and photograph my action, specifically the adapter so that that they can match the stock dimension, same request with regard to the trigger, single stage davies.

There was no mention at this time of them stopping this line, it is just that the omark action has a variety of different adapters and they need the dimensions so you get the right one.

The action is waiting for a base to be drilled, tapped and fitted, that being a Ken Farrell Savage Round Top short one piece 20moa, to be topped with a nightforce 8-32x56 BR. possible problem with the one piece base being the front screws come down into the adapter, which I am not sure at this time is the way to do, might go with two piece 20moa bases instead, to clear the adapter at the front.

Any other suggestions would be welcome

Although people use two piece adapters, I would not recommend them. If things can move at some stage in the future, they will - Murphy's Law.

Stay away from the adapter for any drilling rail holes. You should be able to get a blank, just drill the holes for the action body, not the adapter.

Thanks Rod for the heads up on adapters and rails. I will have to source a one piece blank that has 20moa and go from there.

Mate, try the state association shops....such as VRA, SARA or QRA, they often have rails for sale.
