Does anyone know what's happening regarding the ranges to be shot. I know that there was a show of hands at the end of last year's Queens, and a clear majority of visiting shooters favoured having a 900.

From what I can remember Alan I think they are going to have a 900m in the leadup only.
Apparently its to hard for the easterners and won't be included in this years Queens

The reason givern for deleting the 900mts from the Queens programe was because of a revolt by SA rank and file . They indicated they would not attend the Queens if 900 was on the programe.

Hmmm. I did see it get fairly rough there in the 2007 Queens, but all they did was shorten the ranges, which they could still do with a 900. I think its a shame not to use it if its available. I'm sure Canberra and Sydney would both like to have a 900 if they could.

I watched the show of hands when the question was put "Would you stay away if 900 was brought in next year", and did not recognise any Vics with their hands up!!

Let me ask you this. Other than Match Rifle, I can't see any OPMs or other major SA shoots that use the 900. So how many club shoots use it?

I think some ppl have issue with it in SA as well at club level
All I remember is that it was going to be include some years ago and SARA received many phone calls from interstate saying if it was included they wouldn't attend our event.

Looking forward to catching up with you at our Queen's shoot soon! I'm with you on the 900m range and its a pity it wont be shot this year. The weather at Lower Light can be testing but its the same for everyone and at a long range you can make up some points if you can read the wind.

How many clubs shoot 900m? I now shoot at Murray Bridge RC and we program in 4 club competition shoots at 1000yd every year. On top of that Paul Janzso has now organised a regular 1000yd BR competition at our club.

Maybe you should move to Adelaide where we regularly shoot at long range and join us at MBRC

I must admit I have some sympathy with those SA shooters who rarely if ever shoot interstate. Most never shoot 900m/1000yd at their home range and may struggle with it at a Queens. But for those SA shooters who may go to Vic, WA, NT and Qld, it would be good for them to get experience at 900. Particularly with 223s and to a lesser extent 308s, things happen ballistically that you don't see even at 800m.

Thanks for the residency invitation. But if I did take you up, it wouldn't be for lack of long range shoots. At Rosedale this season we have programmed about 50 10 shot shoots at 800yd or more, incuding 12 at 1000yd. It certainly stands us in good stead at Queens shoots - I would imagine 1000yd could be quite intimidating for those whose home range finishes at 600 yds or so.

I'm sorry to say that it'll probably be next year before I get to SA. Enforced rationing of shooting travel means I'll probably get there about every 2 years. However I hope to call in and touch base in transit to or from WA.

Hi Alan

The ranges for the Hunt are, 300, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900.
And for the Queens, they are (drum role, not very exciting)
300, 500, 600, 600, 600, 700, 800, 800.

900 in the leadup, but not in the Queens, strange. Well it will probably blow its ring out and will all be shot at 300.

Ian, not shooting 900 at Lower Light is not so much a matter of being testing for the shooters as being a matter of the very serious safety issues for the markers. Anyone who has marked at Lower Light will know what I mean. With high winds, particularly coming in from the coatal quarter, the target gallery is like a wind tunnel and can be extremely unsafe. I gather things have been improved but my understanding is that marker consideration is still more an influencing factor than shooter preference when it comes to the long ranges.

The OHS of the markers is a big factor we have made some changes to the way the score is indicated by the use of Velcro square place at the appropriate locations around the target this eliminates the use of the paddle and speeds up the marking.
