Hornady have a new jacket and revised bullet making process and are claiming less than 1/10 of a thou difference bullet to bullet. Have also released a new Match Bullet line.

but lower BC than the A max

G'Day all,
The 75gn Amax's I've used in my 223 worked very well and got me a couple of podium finishes in FO. But I've always wondered about having 3 parts in the bullet contruction, whereas the traditional go to bullet offerings such as the SMK and custom bullets only had the jacket and core. Alignment and concentricy of the component parts must be 50% more difficult to do with a bullet using a plastic tip. Just another part to be wrong can ruin performance.
Given some the reports of poor performance on this site of the Amax's, I think it would be best that an improved bullet is offered, regardless of the BC figures.
Anyway, we'll have to wait and see if they are approved for Fstd and more importantly the feedback on how well they shoot across a wide range of shooting sports.

Adam, these new Match bullets can be pointed but the Amax cant. I'm betting higher BC when pointed!
Better order that new pointing die you have been considering

I reckon these 162 gn pills will be just the thing for the 7/08 I am waiting for. Should be able to get them to 284/180gn velocities. I was hoping for more 162 bullets to come out.

just buy the a max's and theres no pointing required
are the new a max supposed to be much more consistant than they used to be?
ian i have been thinking about a pointing die but at this stage my gun still shoots beta than i can. i took sammy the 7 saum out on sat and its unbelievable what sort of changes you can shoot THROUGH!

Adam, the first time I shot 180gr VLDs I thought exactly the same thing. There is no doubt that at the longs the 6.5mm is severely handicapped when compared to the heavy, high BC 7mm bullets. Welcome aboard the 7mm bandwagon!
The Amax bullets are back to being high quality again, maybe the QA has improved? If your chamber suits the 180gr VLDs jammed then it will work fine with the 162gr Amax's jumped (20 thou). I have found the 162gr Amax to be extremely accurate out to 600 metres and launch them around 3000fps out of my Shehane. Just recently shot a pair of 60s at 400 metres using them!

rdavies,
a guy down here has a 7/08 ackley and finds the 162 bullets ideally suited to it.
his case is not quite pure ackley, as he ran a 7x57 ackley reamer in short.
he pushes the neck/shoulder junction back when forming cases from lapua small primer 308 brass thus getting a longer necked case.
he refers to the 284 win as a barrel burner.

Bruce, I would also think about some sort of 7mm wildcat based off a 308 case. Decent recoil and long enough barrel life that I wont feel guilty playing with it. With the lighter and very high quality 162gn bullets, it should get to the 2800fps node with great inherant accuracy. I think the mid sized cases with lighter 7mm bullets will have a place in flyshoots and mid range F class shoots.
A few 1000yd shooters have had bad things to say about the quality of current 7mm bullets, so maybe this new 162gn bullet might be closer to the much loved 187gn 30 cal BIB bullet?

rod,
don't listen to too much the 1000 yd guys say. they don't know everything, and not many of them understand our discipline.
they can make a name for themselves with one (lucky) blinder group, but their aggs are possibly no better or even as good as some of ours.
just because it is benchrest doesn't mean it is better. in part this is because we do a lot more shooting than most 1000 yd guys, and so are more in touch with the job.
in fact i await any good fclass results with bib flat base bullets, and think i will be waiting for a while.
another bullet the 1000 yd guys seem to rave about, the 168 sierra 7mm has yet to leap onto the fclass stage, probably because it is yesterday's bullet.

Bruce,
How often have you shot F class without the target being marked at the end, not between shots? That would be the apples to apples comparison with 1000 yard benchrest.

john,
that's exactly what i'm saying.
don't believe everything said by 1000 br guys because of apples and oranges.
and don't believe they or their theories are better than us or ours. also, because we are marked for each shot, our groups are less random luck than theirs.
if we weren't marked between shots, i'll bet our scores would be worse with bib flatbase than vld.

Hi Rod, As far as i know i'm the only guy in OZ to jump through hoops to get the 187BIBs over to here .. Probably because it takes me nearly 12 months for them to arrive ,cost is close to 95 cents ea some times so i don;t think they will become main stream anytime soon .. Do i think they are worth it ,damn straight they are ,i think they are the best Long range bullet produced .. As far as score shooting goes they hold there own in this department as well as group, in 2010 i set the 10 match score agg record for AUST to 94.8 from 100, thats nearly 95 of the 100 bullets i shot over the complete year landed inside a 7 inch circle at 1000yds .. As i have always said , F class is and will never be 1000yd Benchrest and viva la diff, all you got to do is use what ever suits .. It seems that the 180 7mm bullet suits the F events to a tee , but you can forget trying the win a 1 K bench match with that projectile IMO, horses for courses .. JR.. The Hornady Match & Amax 162gr has a better BC than the 30 cal BIB so will get blown around a bit less. Will have to wait and see if accuracy is better than the BIB or 7mm 180gr VLDs.
Looking here:
http://www.bibullets.com/products/ the BIB has a measured BC = 0.528. I can see that if you can get your group of bullets all away in the same wind condition (like BR can sometimes achieve) then accuracy would rule but if the wind changes the highest BC would have an advantage.
Interesting stuff JR, you gotta come over to SA and show us how to shoot in a 1000 yard BR. I for one would love to see how its done by an experienced BR shooter!
