Anzac rifle range closed as from today by Firearms Dept due to a lady claiming a projectile went past her on the walking trail.
NRWRA will appeal the decision. This news to me from a little bird.

The claim is rubbish.

The claim was on the day of the city versus country shoot so every round was effectively accounted for and except for a few people lining up on the wrong target and a few turns out on their scope there were no lost shots. Certainly there were non outside of the safety template area.

Is there any surprise that the day of this "incident" coincides with Peter Garret visiting the range with the relevant people from the department of finance and comcare? No surprises.

The claimant was apparently following the great coastal walks book which mentions so many times that there's a rifle range there it's not funny so this walker knew what was going on and has deliberately created an incident.

It doesn't help that the Sydney Branch SSAA are encouraging this unfounded claim.
Unfortunately an incident Sunday week ago, put another nail in the coffin of the Anzac Range. On that Sunday NSWRA were using their electronic targets for an competition and SSAA had there usual Sunday competitions

Sydney's best Harbour and Coastal walks book has Anzac Rifle Range listed in there must do walks. The bush walker claims that she had a bullet in her direction, possibly a ricochet from a metal NSWRA target. When she complained to the NSWRA office she got an inappropriate response, as a result it escalated the incident and the bush walker informed the police firearms registry and the commonwealth of the unsafe incident. In her complaint she stated "I am appalled by the lack of signage that exists". the signage is completely inadequate and what is there is vandalised to a point that most is ineligible. And what happened means something has failed in the systems we have in place so how can we stop such a serious incident from happening again".

NSWRA, the RUC and Commonwealth were informed by the SSAA of all the above issues 8 months ago ,SSAA placed temporary signage at the back of the Range, the rest refused to acknowledge the problem and did nothing, as a result we have the current situation.

There's so much that doesn't add up about this "incident" particularly given some of the past incidents staged by some range users.

I should also point out that the walking tracks are part of the area handed over as national park recently.

If this is legit despite the doubts then this really just another repeat of Garrets insulation debacle. Lets hand it over to national parks who fail to maintain it safely because it's their responsibility

The federal government should not have turned the land into national park in the first place.

Wouldn't the best thing be to discuss what needs to be done??? e.g. getting adequate signage in place as quickly as possible. Or have we all admitted defeat?

You're saying that signage is actually a problem. Is it?

How about confirming if there is a problem first before we start being critical of the problem solving techniques.

Okay then confirm whether its a problem. Is that being done? Is anything being done?

I was born some 40 years ago and have always been lead to believe that an "Innocent until proved guilty" stance was the norm...
If this is no longer the case we really are in a sad state and something for another topic.
As Alan F Said...Fact: Range closed!!!
Course of action: Negotiate a passage of usage to continue normal operations.
The above is for the attention of those affected by the 31st Oct deadline...
As there IS a relocation clause I personally would be considering it because the land is valuable (in one way or another) the shove is there and other state association and clubs will soon battle similar scenarios...
"Get rid of the minority group"...they will not give up until some bearded dogooder greeny has a smile like a cheshire cat.
Ideally located alternative ranges may be great distances from existing ranges but will be better than none.
I believe this kind of approach is not so much as giving in (or losing) but being realistic (and winning).
Let them have their milk whilst we lap at the cream...Positiveness is the only way forward...

The City v Country event was back on the 2nd and 3rd of July, and it is interesting to note that reference was made to a ricochet from a metal target. Metal target, I doubt it, having been a member of the NSWRA for some thirty years, I know for a fact that we do not use metal targets!!

It is also interesting to note that supposedly this ricochet came from the NSWRA side of the range, the sea side of the range, and don't forget the mound behind the targets some ten, fifteen metres if not more in heigtht above the level of the targets.

Was an actual report made to the Police, is there an incident report and reference number and contact details of this person, or is this something more sinister. Did the police actually attend the scene with this person and actually take a statement, like they would at any other incident. It sort of sounds like the asbestos that we were all told about, but when you look at the reports the story ends up being different.

I would doubt that the response from the NSWRA would be inappropriate, given the gravity of the current situation that ANZAC is in, let alone a safety issue such as this, if it did actually occur.

One person's opinion of suitable action in response to an incident, sometimes is not to the same level of expectation of another, and in some cases other people can never be satisfied regardless of what one may say or do, you have lost before you have even begun to address the issue at hand, an ulterior motive from the start and this may be the case here.

Hopefully this issue will be resolved in the very near future, as the NSW Queens is on in September and possibly the last one ever, of which if possible I intend to shoot in. This year also marks 135 years of the NSWRA Queens.

More info in.

Some works have been done to the site.

Complainant had seen and ignored the warning signs as they were directed to by the SMH publication they were following.

Location of "incident" was directly behind range being used by the SSAA.

It highlights one of the bigger issues on the range which is the accuracy (or lack thereof) of the information information coming out of the SSAA and the reason for that inaccurate information.

Hopefully the SSAA will be issuing an apology to the NSWRA for getting the information so wrong.

Are there any updates as to the Range staying closed? The Queens shoot is coming up soon so a few people are anxious to know what the latest updates are.

No updates yet really.

Everything that needed to go into the registry has been prepared and submitted correctly and now it's up to the registry to do it's thing.

The MDRA is having it's AGM next Saturday I think (the email is at home) so we will probably find out more then.
