Am interested in the exotic end of this game. What are the standout calibres that dominate? Is 6XC in the game? Thanks!

Looking at local results, pretty much the 308.

6XC would be a good choice
6mm Dasher
6X47L
6.5X47L
6.5X284
Most of the 7mm's 284 7mmsaum 280ack
300wsm
The most important thing is to be able to tune the load to give minimal elevation at all ranges.
The FO cal's have a good choice of High BC bullets these will perform better in trying conditions.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Whats dominating? Anything from 6-7 mil. I would rate the 284 as one of the more popular cartridges (especialy in the longs). The 6BRs and 6 Dashers are also pretty popular, (especialy in the short to mid ranges). The 6XC you mentioned would be pretty much in between these two. If I had to use one cartridge all the way and couldnt use something exotic (like a 6.5WSSM), then a 6XC would be something I would be looking at.

Rod can I read between the lines that you are going to use your 6.5WSSM at all ranges??? :D

All round I think the 6XC is a great choice and should be very competitive all round, easy to tune and a joy to shoot.

Don't be suprised what Rod will use next :)

I like 6br and improved versions for short ranges and 284 for the longer stuff. I have a 6x47 Swiss Match project under way so will see how that goes.

Remember the 3 - B's for accuracy, Bullets, Barrels and Brass.

Hi Cam
were are you getting the brass from? or are you forming it from something.
I wanted to go down that path then the 6.5X 47 came out and necking this down was and easier option at the time.

I was going to use my 6.5WSSM for as much as possible as it was the most accurate barrel at 800-900yds I had with only 50 shots on it, then last time I used it, it started to shot gun, it just jumped out of tune as it ran in I hope. No opportunities to retest, but I might take it to Brissy and see how it goes?
As for the 6mms, I would prefer to try a 6XC or Swiss Match over the 6x47s I have been using.

Booked the gunsmith and will be dropping them over to him Monday nite.

Question for 2012, what cal. case combination is going to dominate ?

Cheers

I reckon Cameron has the best recipe. If conditions are good for a 6mm, a 6BR will be so close to the other 6mms, that it won't matter. If conditions are rough, those 180gn Bergers in a 284 are just about as good as it gets. For a one gun solution, personally I wouldn't go under 6.5mm. If the WSSM case can launch a 140gn at 2950fps, it should be a great all-rounder.

Looking ahead, Berger has just released a 230gn 30 cal with G7 BC of .364 (c.f. 7mm 180 G7 .337). This is going to make 30 cal an attractive proposition, so my prediction for the future is more 30 WSMs on the mound, and for the real masochists, the bigger 30 magnums.
