New chum here, and I am sure there is a reason, but, can anyone tell me why F Class couldn't be considered for an Olympic sport?

If it keeps growing at the current rate worldwide, it could well be an Olympic sport one day. Although it would involve some very hard work by ICFRA to get a foot in the door.

In the meantime, we have the world F-Class Championships every 4 years - a very prestigious event.

I would have thought it was because it would be considered to be heavily equipment related, where as Target Rifle fired offhand is more shooter related. While I would like it if F class was an Olympic sport, I think Target Rifle should surely be an Olympic sport.

I think the last centre-fire Olympic competition was in Tokyo in 1964, UIT 300m. which was shot with 30 Cal.

Before that, there was "Running Boar". It was all very European, particularly Eastern. Yer' Yev's book is very informative.

The catch cry of the IOC was that many countries did not have enough land for a range and safety zone. The more likely reason was that the West could not beat the Commies.

Forget Full Bore as an Olympic sport.

I read reference to a 3p field rifle which was separate to 3p small bore rifle.

very difficult to get a new sport added to the Olympic Games, Archery has tried for a while to include compound without success.

The IOC has a cap they would like on the number of competitors at the olympics and the number of sports. Team events get preference over individual events (this is for the non-core sports) and the sport needs a minimum amount of nations to compete in it.

Very interesting topic. I have scanned through the editorials as well.
With the previous Olympic games my 7mm would have went over 6000 000 people to get to 1000y. This was Beijing where space is of the essence.
The next Olympic Games in London will not make use of any shooting event at Bisley for many reasons.
We must remember most of all long range facilities are owned by the military - this will never fly with the Olympic committee.

Interesting - the whole of old Europe has one long range in Germany. This only go 600m. So all ICFRA related F-Class nations shoot in Bisley if they want a match up to 1000yards.

In the mean while we keep on shooting and hope that the Common Wealth Games eventually allow F-Class. Hopefully not with pairs shooting.

I shoot at Ulfborg in Denmark from time to time and the 600m range is seldom used by anyone other than myself/wife, we see a lot of Germans come over the border to visit the range but the always stop at the 200/300m electronics.

On the odd occasion anyone wanders over to us on the 600m firing point for a chat they soon run off when I suggest they try it. Shooting is just a mind set, 1000 is not so different to 100 yet even here in the UK I see shooters pack up and leave when we move out to 600 and even some of our clubs hardened 900/1000 shooters flatly refuse to shoot at 1100/1200.

Regarding the Olympics and Bisley, well I am not sure I can bring myself to comment. The reasons for the loss of Bisley as an Olympic venue are probably best left alone now.
