I'm a beginner and been away from rifle shooting for a while. Been doing some reading and contemplating over past results and after reading the list of items about vertical problems and rifle balance wondered just where should one attach the bipod on a rifle? I have a Savage 12 f/tr and shoot f class with a Davies lightweight bipod. The savage has a slot so the bipod can be positioned anywhere from just in front of the action all the way to the end of the stock.

Is it a balancing act? ie position the bipod at the centre of gravity?

David, the trend is to place the bipod as far up the forestock as the rail will permit. In the big international shoots people are having stocks made with extra long forestocks. Look here: http://www.accurateshooter.com/guns-of- ... nweek0104/

Personally I have found it helps reduce muzzle jump by having the bipod placed well forward. It also helps having the bipod within reach so you can adjust it easily if needed. Find a compromise that works for you and keeps the bipod on the ground if possible when you pull the trigger.
