For those who know him, Jim McKinley, the "father" of the Fly Shoot, and keen F Open shooter, has passed away last night as the result of a fire at his home in Canberra. This is indeed very terrible news. Little is known of the circumstances at this time and his home is now a crime scene.

Jim was a member of the Canberra Rifle Club and the SSAA. Recently the SSAA Range at Majura was named in his honour. If it went "bang", Jim has shot it.

What a loss, the shooting sports has lost one of it's Greatest. We are diminished

That is very sad news, Jim was a great guy and did a lot for the shooting movement.

Very sad to hear the passing of Jim McKinley. He was a tireless volunteer and promoter of the shooting sports. He was on some committee or another for more than 30 years with SSAA ACT. It was he and John Rawson who started the first ever 500m Fly shoot in Canberra in 1991.

Here is the article in the Canberra Times today. Details are sketchy but it would appear the fire was in his "gun room/reloading room" and he was trapped.
