My step son is turning 12 in a week or so and I will be applying for his JRs permit so he can come and shoot.

I plan to purchase a CHEAP rifle for him and I to use in comp in 3 position and F standard..
I have a savage 12 6.5x47 for F open but I would like him to have its own rifle to use and modify over time.

The idea of a Omark really gets me excited but I have serious concerns about using a single shot rifle in 3 position.

Has anyone tried this? Perhaps a allen butt bullet holder would be enough to make things easy?

Anyway the budget will be the big killer..... $1000 for rifle and optics......


Scopes that come to mind are:

Sightron S2 6-24 $440
Nikon buck master 6-18 $370

And open to any other suggestions..

As you can see this is a real tight ass one as I do not want to over invest until he shows real interest.


Like all rifle budgets I am willing to stretch a little but dont want to go over board as I will need to purchase dies and components for it also.

The weight of the Omark may be a little heavy for a 12yr also the butt length may be a problem.
The Sightron is a better scope for FS

What calibre are you intending on using for him? Also where are you situated? Most of the 3P rifles are .223/6mm AFAIK. I'd pick up a cheap fast twist Tikka T3 for a starter rifle.

You didn't say exactly which flavour of 3P you're talking about but whether it's NRAA Field Class or SSAA Field Rifle he'll become very disheartened very quickly trying to shoot the rapids without a magazine rifle. Unfortunately most sporting .223s don't have the twist rate needed to stabilise the heavier projectiles needed for F Std.

I'd say John's suggestion of a fast twist Tikka T3 is right on the money.

I considered howa ect as they were repeaters but then you run into the problem of the slow 223 twist and the fast 308.


I know its a tight ass option but what about a 1:9 twist Savage/Stevens repeater?

At least if I go down that road he can have a light factory 223 barrel and then purchase a fast twist 223 down the track.

I know this will will exceed the price of the tikka in the long run but at least it really gives cheap savage ready barrel options...

It is stupidly difficult doing things on a low budget.

1:9 is fast enough to stabilise the 69gr projectile and while he's learning that should be adequate. Make sure you can fit 5 rounds in the mag. I can only get 4 in my Ruger M77 and it's a fiddle to get the 5th in the chamber. You want things to be as easy as possible for him.

I would also look at vortex optics. www.supervshooting.com sell them.

The other option is 3P as the 22lr version, but like the other options an expensive exercise

If you buy a Vortex just be carefull with the Crossfire range. A member here is on his 4th one and it is still no good.

How did you go with this? I have an Omark in .308 but also have a .223 Omark barrel that I'd donate both to the young bloke if needed. You would need to get a bolt head in .223. The stock is no good but have a left hand one that was for a Musgrave IIRC.
