Crows Nest Goombungee OPM, SE Qld 9th and 10th February 2013
Posted: Mon Feb 11, 2013 1:33 pm
Good fields of 10 in F Open and 15 in F Standard competed for the prizes and cash at the very well run Crows Nest Goombungee (CNG) Open Prize Meeting over the weekend.
Talented TR shooter Ashley Bidgood heads up the great Committee at CNG and as always, enjoyed the total support of his wonderful volunteer workers for the weekend. Great hot food, friendly service and a challenging but picturesque range are what CNG is about for the visitor. As per the photo below taken from the elevated 600 yard mound, the bullets flight is a very long way above most of the flags, so its the tops of the massive trees that hold the most secrets. That is the 500 yard mound way down below, in the photo.

Saturdays 500 yard Sweepstakes of 15 shots saw plenty of F Class scores in the high eighties. Its was my lucky day in F Open, winning with 89-10, just in front of F Standard winner Lowell Tillock from Goondiwindi's 89-6.
A few squalley showers didnt diminish anybodys enthusiasm throughout the afternoon.
Sunday dawned fine and clear, and it was indeed a fabulous day to be using top quality high powered scopes. My own March 5-50 sat on 50 power all day without even the slightest hint of mirage. Thank you, God !!
The OPM shoot was 10 shots at each of 600, 500 500.
My 284 Win was having a good day on 168 gr Berger VLDs, and won me the 600 yard and first 500 yard ranges with 60-5 in both.
Shooting second in the final 500 yards range , i only had to shoot 58 to be guaranteed an overall win. 5 x's in a row, then i dropped a point . Picked it up for the last few with 6's. Final shot to clinch it was an X for sure....at worst a 6. Cam McEwan tells me i was getting up before the target was even pulled (ie zero Follow Through) . Bolt out and packing up.....target back up showing a bloody 4 !!
That meant Cam could equal me with a 60-9 and win with a 60-10 so plenty of good pressure on him......good practise for his upcoming trip representing Australia at the World Championships in New Mexico in August.
He did his best, but the CNG wind gods were shining my way, and Cam finished with 60-6 to scare the pants off me (177-15)and take out second place overall with 177-12 , shooting his 284 Shehane and 180 Berger VLDs.
Dave Reddan in third with 174-9 using a 6.5 x 284 and 140 gr bullets.
Dennis Brown picked up the 4th badge with 173-6 using a 260 AI.(and 140 grain Bergers for the very first time, doing approx 2900 fps).
USA bound Julie McEwan grabbed the 5th F Open badge with 170-7, shooting her 284 Shehane and 175 gr Sierras

In F Standard, talented Narrabri NSW shooter Alex Wilson won the day with 173-9.
Great to see Emile Daniel from Natives Club at Belmont in the money in second place with 171-11.
Third badge to M Sforcina on 166-6, then in equal placing for the final two badges, both with 165-6 on the scoreboard, were Lowell Tillock from Goondiwindi Rifle Club and Dick Blocksidge from Albert District.
Congratulations to Crows Nest Goombungee for a great weekends shooting and a very well run competition that was well supported by some 70 something shooters in total.
