6BR performance from 26" barrel

Looking at grabbing a 6mmBR barrel for a trued rem action for a short range 3,4 and 500m gun. Looking at 26 inches as I dont want it too long. Will probably end up varminting with it as well.

So what sort of velocities are roughly capable in a straight 6BR and 105-107 bullets in a 26" barrel? I know the standard load is usually in the 29-30gr of 2208 range and have thousands of CCI 450's on hand.

6PPC achieves 3400fps with a 70grn bullet out of a 20 inch barrel so a 26 inch in a 6BR would work just fine. I would say expect between 2900 & 3000 fps with 105 bullets. More than enough for all yardages actually.

Brad - I have a 26 inch barrel in mine and run it at 2820 fps with 108's. With such a small charge of fast powder it doesn't gain as much from a long barrel as other calibers do but you will get a little more.

Of course accuracy is exceptional

Dave- have you tried running 70gr varmint pills through it as well? I know its not generally the done thing in F Class using match barrels for hunting, but we have found our 223 barrels that shoot 80gr SMK's to work very well with 50gr Nosler BT's on varmints. To the point now where I dont ever use the 223 at the range.

brad - not sure if you are talking to this Dave or the other. Short answer is yes. I have had a few BR's and most of the work for them early was "varminting". I quickly went away from the 70 grainers though and settled on the Berger 80gr FB varmint bullet which is exceptionally accurate. The ballistics are basically the same as the 70 grainers (wind drift wise anyway) but superb accuracy won me over. They go well in the 8 twist no worries. :D

brad,
i too found that with 50 gn b.tips.
they have a fair jump, but are quite accurate.
using bm2 powder in loger barrels, they move along pretty well.
bm 8208 might be interesting to try - not quite sure of its burning rate, but i think faster than 2208, & slower than bm2.
point blank benchresters call it bm3.
conventional 50 gn pills blew up out of my barrel, but the noslers worked well.
keep safe,
bruce.

Ihave started playing with 58gr zmax in my 9.25 twist 6mmbr. Getting 3000fps out of a 18" barrel.

Well i think that settles it. Just got to find an 8 twist heavy palma or heavy varmint or straight taper barrel. A mate has a heap of new cases and pills for me already for a swap with a tub of shotgun powder. Score as I dont own a shotgun anymore!
