I'm new to f class, well about to join have been shooting for 18 years but not long range. Was wondering if anyone on here could tell me If a savage 12 benchrest in .308 is a good kit to start off with?

It will be fine
Most of us started with a hunting rifle so you are ahead there
Savage make some very good gear and their Mod 12 are generally suited for most long range shooting.

Cheers mate I don't have a big budget coz the wife thinks I should do things on the house first. But I can do this for around 3 grand.

Half inch 5 round groups from a stirling. 22mag at 200 yds, we all want one of them :D

Nah it's a cheap piece of crap that I floated the barrel on, I still got it , can't seem to part with it.

I started with an Omark then a Savage 12 F/TR. The latter shot like crap until I got it properly bedded by a gunsmith - now it shoots great.

Cheers

I own one and enjoy shooting it.

Can I ask why the 12 Benchrest over the 12 Fclass?
I would think the 12 Fclass tracks better in bags due to parallel butt.

Very rarely does a factory rifle shoot great straight out of the box they are manufactured to a price not and accuracy standard
But a good choice

Ok I like the look of the benchrest more I don't like the flat bottom on the f class but more importantly they don't do it in .308 and that is what I wanna shoot.

308 yes fine!

Stuff the look, it has no effect on function.

Are you shooting bipod or rest?
I assume the 12 bench rest has the same 3" forend as the 12 Fclass?

Also have you considered the FTR?

Yeah I have but I have a question. What are the rules in f/tr? Do we do it in wa? Is it .223/.308 or other exotic species?

No not FTR

The Savage 12 FTR in 308 win.
Its a model that I have seen many more times in the country compared to the 12 Benchrest

FTR is bipod only
8.25kg including bipod
any 30cal or .223 projectile
safe trigger
this is the international form of FS

Mick,

Have you started shooting with a club yet? I'd be looking at what the too guys use and see how you can build the same within your budget. You will be better suited I think. You can shoot F/TR here in Australia, its just to be shot under F-Open. It's not a seperate class yet. I'd also be looking on used guns for the rifle you want aswell.

No I haven't started with a club yet been working 7 days to get more cash, but will be shortly. Didn't know about used guns ie chamber or barrel a bit flogged out.
