I have just taken delivery of a new 280 AI , built on a Pierce long single shot action and a raw Kelby laminated stock, from LRP.

I want to see the grain rather than spray it with solid colour .... I was thinking of a light stain with cabots oil based woodstain, such as used on furniture, and a sealer spray coat of exterior marine varnish (probably 3 coats actually)

I recently restored a 100 year old winchester (new stock) with a cabots stain followed by Danish oil ... I am tempted to do the same but of course the Target rifle is more likely to get caught out in the rain...

Any comments ??

Not that I am overly experienced, but j am not a fan of how varnishs wear over time, and when the do raw timber is exposed.

I recently refinished my Mastin stock using Feastwatson ring oil and sealed it with one if their wax's the advantage is you can maintain the wax finish very easily.

Feastwatson products really make any timber look beautiful!!

There's a lot to be said for Birchwood Casey stock finish, applied in the recommended manner & not just painted on.

I like True Oil.

I am more of a metal worker than woodworker, however I refinished a walnut stock about 2 years ago with the Birchwood Casey kit. It was a complete success and has held up very well with weekly use as my number one target rifle.

Will second the use of a straight 2pk clear coat. Nice and slippery in the bags and if done correctly really shows off a piece of wood.

I have just redone an Omark stock using Minwax wipe on poly on the recommendation of a co worker that uses it to finish off guitars he builds. More than happy with the results.

I am thinking of a light grey stain so i will go with the marine varnish coz its clearer. also i have had success with it before. thanks

I have used True Oil in the past, the results incredible especially after stripping off the old finish, sanding back lightly for marks and dents, amazing finish. I think the last time I did it was three coats with a light sanding with steel wool in between coats.

Thats good advice, I used danish oil on my walnut 30-30 stock but sadly the wood on this laminated stock has no open grain to soak up oils or stain evenly. It must be a type of pine although its rigid enough.

So I have used marine stain/varnish in a gloss red cedar colour. Its tricky to get even but starting to look nice ... I would bet its fairly rain resistant as well.
