Hi all
Since getting my FO rifle up to weight I'm thinking about storing it muzzle down to save the butt pad and allow solvent to drain out
Might need something for the muzzle to rest in
Dose anyone store this way

I store all my FS target, and scoped hunting rifles, crown down so as no residual solvent/oil gets back via the action and under the bedding.
My sons TR rifle has the front sight, so, it has to be stored butt down, but, to stop anything from coming from the barrel to under the bedding I fold a piece of 4x2 flannel and use it for a plug in the throat.
I have a fitted piece of dense carpet on the floor of the gun safe.
Just watch when you put the rifle in the safe that you do not catch the crown on the bottom steel ledge where the door shuts.

Tim, I fit a rubber cup to the muzzle of all my barrels, available from any hardware store, protects the crown during storage and transit. Rifles are stored muzzle down.

A quick trip your hardwar store, Bunnings, Masters etc and grab a rubber chair stop / floor protector, Im sure youve seen them on chair and table legs. They come in all sizes and cost about .90c each. Drill a 1/8 hole in the bottom and put a piece of Chux Superwipe inside as a sleeve. It stops rubber sticking to the barrel and soaks up any solvent that may leak out. When Im not shooting they are always on the end of my barrels to protect the crown and keep out any dirt/dust that might be blowing on the range on windy days. Cheers Andy

Hi Tim,

You can buy chamber plugs from Sinclairs, then store your rifle with the barrel pointing upwards.

The benefit I see from this is that the solvent works its way down to the chamber end of the barrel, where a lot of the carbon hangs out.

I let the short scrub sit in the barrel for a day or two, then clean it out.

I have stored all my rifles muzzle down in the safe for the last 20 years. I just fold an old towel and lay it across the bottom of the safe. Never had a problem with the muzzle doing this.

I believe it is by far the best way to store rifles.
