Hey guys,

I've got an old school omark that I'm going to use in fclass standard.
The barrel is a 1in14 twist. My readings here and other places suggest this is what was used yesteryear. I assume its all okay with the 155 bullets on offer? Or is it marginal as per the Berger twist calculator?
Will it struggle at longer distances?

A follow up question, if going to ftr, is a 1 in 12 the go?

And lastly what sort of loads will the omark not accept with f std bullets and also ftr bullet weights up to 190gr???

That Omark may only have been proofed for the 144gn Nato round.

I know all about Barnards that were built for that round (144) not 175s or 190s just be aware of the original requirements not what todays wish list is.

I had a 1:14 for a good year and a half and it shot the 155 Sierra 2156s really nicely. It was before the burgers became popular so not sure how it would handle those slightly longer projectiles.

It should handle 155 HBC's if it is like a couple here.They wouldn't work with 190 Sierra Match Kings,175 Match Kings were good.
If it was mine,I would use 155grain projectiles.

The old Omark 1-14, will be best out to 600 yards and you might just squeeze 700 yards, but after that I don’t think it will be competitive, like really tight, although it will get to 900 yards. But ask yourself what are the distances you normally shoot? Few shooters can take advantages of longer distances. The barrel will run well with tangent ogive bullets like the sierra 155 grain. It will not be suitable for heavier bullets.

The chambers on the Omark and the throat tend to be on the large side. You may get best results by neck sizing with the occasional full length resize and you will have to play with the free flight because they have a long throat. The Sierras ran best in these barrels with .010” jump. I would use 2206H powder due to the shorter barrel. I used a few of these barrels, having cut off the lugs and with a decent chamber with great success in my wife’ Musgrave in the past.

I am currently running a .308 Standard rifle a 1-15, and it will regularly put 7 supercentres in at 300 yards and have put 9 in at a prize meeting. But it falls apart after 700 yards.

You really do have a large window for twist rates depending on the bullet shape although not theoretically perfect. If you want to shoot one barrel in the future, across all ranges then you would be better served with a 1-12. If you want to shoot the longs and have a greater range of heavier bullets to use, then I suggest you go with 1-11. David

The lugs cracked using 175s. Barnard has made two progressively larger bolts and actions since the first ones for the 308 face. BE CAREFUL.

i have a 30" 1 in 13" tobler, (twist has been checked) which in theory, should stabilise 155 HBC's,, sierra 2156 etc to 1000yds ???

the trouble is, that, in this barrel, all projectiles, except the standard sierra 2155 produce shotgun groups,elongated bullet holes and random keyholes at 1000yds when launched at approx 2900-2950 fps.

the next 308 will definitely be a 1 in 12" twist for 155 grain projectiles.

You're a perfect example of everything that's wrong with internet forums, you get on here and crap on about something you obviously cannot prove or have much of a clue on.
I have 15 Barnards in my save at present from 2006-2014 all have the same bolt and lug size , cracking lugs ???? Never heard of it and neither has Keith Hills by the tone of his response who has probably sold more than a 1000 Barnards over the years !!! I have built P actions into big hi pressure calibers and never had a problem.
If these people actually exist I would like to contact the owners who have "cracked lugs" so that I, as the Barnard distributor can inspect and make right any issue.
