I am a little over some issues that are being discussed at the moment.
Thought I would share this rifle I have in the safe.
It is a BR rifle built by RW Hart in the US. It was made in 1974. The bolt is a Remington. Hart started making their own bolts in 1975. The action, trigger, barrel and stock were all made by Hart. The action is a lot more robust than the Remington 40x.
The Hart family still make barrels.
To the best of my knowledge the rifle is totally original. It is a 222mag.
I intend to to leave it as is.

That looks pretty special Cam. I continue to be amazed by your collection as it comes out piece by piece. I remember the 222 Mag, just a bit longer in the body and shorter in the neck wasn't it?

I like to collect unusual gear Alan as you have gathered. This gear was made by skilled people who loved what they were doing. Not the mass produced items with poor quality control we see now alot.
Not all bad though. I reckon the Barnard is one of the best all round target actions on the market. Some of the USA gear is rubbish now. Driven by money.

Great rifle Cam. I looked longingly at that on usedguns. Good to hear you are leaving it as is. Old unusual stuff is great. Is the gun tight necked and have you had a chance to shoot it yet?

It's a beautiful thing! I also eyed that one but decided to keep looking for a sako that could be modified. . . . . .THAT is too nice to Butcher.

It's interesting how they have mounted the scope. The 40x versions I've seen just have 2 holes in to top of the barrel for the front mount. Apparently a lot of the early 40x had hart barrels

The scope is a Redfield. It is still crystal clear. This rifle was made just before the more compact target scopes started to appear.
Hence the extension on the receiver ring. Yes Remington used mounting blocks on their barrels with the 40x's. Anschutz also used scope mounts on their barrels to cater for the long target scopes too.
One of the most popular "compact" target scope to be released was the Lyman. Leupold came on board with their old 24x and so the development continued.
I would consider this rifle a collector as it has not been messed with. The action is still bedded on the wood.

This is another one I owned. Same model. It shows the top profile.
Basically a Rem 40x with less metal cut away. The diameter is 1.4" which makes a big difference to rigidity and bedding area.
Sold it sadly

Yeah Darren, this sort of gear really interests me. I am trying to source some info on it.

If your after history it might be worth firing an email off to hart with a serial number. A lot of companies had logs of dates and buyers especially for things that were ordered by individuals ranger than a big importer. Also a stroll across to a few br matches might get a few people talking! Haha

Does the scope mount have an integral recoil lug or is there non lug?

Adam, I did email Hart. I got the year of manufacture. I will try again as I know they had a list of where all their gear went.
The scope mount is the recoil lug under the receiver. The front mount is threaded to the receiver ring.
