G'day All,

Just interested in peoples experience and opinion of which is the better stock between the McMillan MBR and F-class and why.

As I understand from an old post of Dave Mc's, an alloy bedding block would not be a good option in the F-class? I stand to be corrected if this is not the case.

Stocks are personal thing in most aspects, I don't like either stock. I find the F Class tends to 'bounce" on the bags and the MBR to "tall" in the fore end, but many shoots have been won with both. I prefer laminated stock mainly for the way they absorb vibrations whether it be with traditional bedding or vee block. I really like the Kelby 1M shape but once again that's just my personal opinion. I have also been selling a few "lowriders" which have the 1M fore-end, MBR pistol grip and Shehane tracker butt.

G'day Matt, thanks for your reply. Are they something that you get in as blanks or do you order them inletted to suit which ever action your working on?

I get them as blank and inlet to suit the other plus with laminate if you want to change the grip etc, it's easy.

I agree, I have never favoured synthetic stocks for the same reasons Matt has stated. There are other issues as well, they are more difficult to "glue" & "screw" things to. I like & prefer laminated timber stocks

G'day Brad, it's just needs some final touch ups. I have my .284 shooting extremely well in it, but I'm still not happy with the amount of flex it has. Also, its not as heavy as I'd like it to be.
Although I will finish it for shits and giggles, I'm getting a little tired of mucking around with it.
I've decided that 2015 will be the year that I bite the bullet and purchase a couple of known good stocks that will eliminate all doubt in that department.

Denis, I don't know when I ever said alloy bedding blocks are a bad idea for F class and certainly don't think I have ever felt that way. I have alloy blocks in both my current stocks and also some of my first ones.

If you mean a barrel block then I also have never said they are a "bad idea" - just that it is important to understand the difference in the vibrations they produce (effectively shortening and stiffening the barrel, creating smaller but higher frequency vibrations.) and can be very accurate in their own right - just creating different "tuning" requirements. They are used very effectively with outstanding grouping potential in long range bench rest, f class and short range bench rest.

I have a Tooley MBR on mine. I like it. Shoot well with it etc....



What was said earlier. Stocks are a personal preference more than anything else. Pick what fits you and you are comfortable with.

Also look at Manners F-Class Stock.

My mistake Dave I went looking for the post that I thought I remembered. It was not in reference to a bedding block, it was when you relieved the F-class stock for the recoil lug. I guess it was in my mind that you had done some relief work in the action area and come across a flex issue.

I didn't mean to imply that you said they were a bad idea. I based my comment on my understanding of your situation, as wrong as that may have been. I should have been more clear on that.

Hi Frank, thanks for your post. I like the look of the manners mostly however I don't like that the toe (underside) of the butt is recessed. It seems to me that the lower ends could very easily interfere with certain rear bags such as a SEB bigfoot (which I'm a fan of), when free recoiling.

I purchased a Shehane MBR Tracker for my Panda 308 build. I liked the stock so I got another one to go on a Magnum action that is awaiting the gun doctors assistance.

Same one that I shot at North Arm - if you remember. I had the inletting finished off, pillars and bedding done.

I think off memory the website is scopeusout.com

I found Bill really good to deal with and he delivered exactly what he said he would. Waiting time was about 4 weeks or so. Depending on action it may be semi-inletted. You will need to finish it though which shouldn't be a problem for you.

Good laminate option over the McMillian stocks.

They are good stocks, the Shehane MBR's. These are built by Bill Shehane.
His MBR version is slightly different to the McMillan. Flat along underside of butt and the fore end has fuller sides.
Another plus with the Shehanes, you can order either Laminate or Fibreglass. He gets McMillan to make the fibreglass version. I have both McMillan MBR and Shehane MBR in fibreglass and prefer the Shehane version.
As others have said stocks are an individual thing.
