6br in rem700

Hi all,
going to fit a 6br barrel to a rem700 action (formally a 308), and wanted to know how many others have done so, and if loaded rounds still feed nicely when using the standard floor plate magazine well.
any feed back (pros & cons) will be much appriciated.
barrel is 1 in 8, and i plan on using pills from 90gr to 107gr.
cheers.

No need for the magazine to function for F class. You may need to drop the round in and flick them forward. Ive fitted a single shot follower to my rem to feed 6BR cases. Aside from that make sure your gunsmith gives the action a true up in the process. It will work fine- though maybe case ejection might not be too flash. The rem bolts arent really set up to eject the short and fat cases as well as the aftermarket bolts or actions.

I had a savage repeater set up as a dasher, which is similar, i even got the magazine for 6br, and feeding is problematic, also sometimes extraction, but it can work....
i ended up fitting a single shot adapter instead of the magazine and i still use them now in other calibers.
the problems were:
1. on feeding, the round is front heavy and would tip forward catching the lip of the chamber, so you had to give it a flick to get it in.....
2. on ejection, the short empty case would sometimes flip 180 degrees and land back in the breech instead of getting ejected
just saying, it may not happen at all for you but it did for me ....

Mine is set up as a dasher f class gun and a straight BR varmint rifle with a 13.5 twist barrel. The BR and dasher do feed out of a 308AI type detachable mag if thats an option.

i might look into other 6mm cartridge possibilities.
thanks fellas.

I have a dasher built on a Sako 85 action and it feeds fairly sporadic. There was an article on modifying rem 700 mags on accurateshooter.com, but the pics have been removed. I believe it is a fairly simple conversion. You simply cut down the floor plate and block the bag of the mag, then utilise a 223 spring. There is a bit more involved than that, but that is the gist. There was a yank over there who perfected it. Maybe have an ask on some of the American forums, see if you can dig up some contact info for him.

Gary Eliseo perfected it using a Rem action in his tubeguns. Accurateshooter did an article on it.
Getting it to work is simply a "timing" exercise requiring the magazine lips to be modified. Good luck...

To be reliable, it's more complicated than that & more expensive, but doable!!

You're right Keith. While simple in concept, I don't mean to down play just what a pain these jobs can be.
No doubt Gary did a lot of work to perfect the operation of mag feeding in his tubeguns.

well i've also just bought another barrel, it being a 6.5mm.
i'll probably go down the path of the 6.5x47lap.
hopefully this will be a bit better.
i guess feeding from the standard remington mag will be nice, but not completely essential.
will the 6.5x47 be any better? (being a touch longer).
appreciating the feedback.

6.5x47 feeds nice from a 700 bdl.
The cartridge with long bullets is about a perfect length for the mag.

The 6mm X 47 will work well too.
